Favorite Truckstop Food

Cowboy's north of Atlanta on I-75 (don't know if it's still there). Just about anything on the menu. Their country fried steak with sausage gravy. That's my favorite! I haven't been there since around 2002 though, so don't know if it's the same or not.

 

One morning in the early 1970s, I was seated at the counter waiting for my breakfast at Don's Windmill Truck Stop, Dimondale, MI, near Lansing. A tour bus pulled in. The passengers were members of a male choir from the Netherlands with a woman as their guide and interpreter. The men could not read English, and they were scattered throughout the restaurant wherever they could find seats. Dutchmen took stools on either side of me at the counter. They ordered their breakfast by pointing to the pictures in the menu.

I ate heartily when I had a chance because the next meal may be late in the evening. My order probably consisted of steak, eggs, hash browns, orange juice, coffee, toast or pancakes. Americans typically eat a sweeter breakfast than Europeans. We also eat more meat than Dutchmen were used to at that time. They probably subsisted on bread, cheese and tea back home. My counter-mates got big-eyed when my breakfast was served. I dived right in because I knew they would get theirs in a few minutes.

 

Living in Lansing, I eat at Don's ( hell, I'm only 3-5 miles away from the place ) at least once a week ... GREAT FOOD ! Their Country Fried Steak smothered with Sausage Gravy ... man 'o' man ... amazing !

 

I've eaten at the Windmill often as it used to be a fuel stop for my company. We even rented a building to do maintenance on our trucks.

That all changed when the company built a Lansing terminal and I haven't been back there since.

 

I'm going to have to remember Cowboy's North of Atlanta, if I get that far south. Shouldn't be getting as far north as Lansing, but if I do, I'll stop in. Chicken fried steak with gravy and real mashed potatoes is one of my favorite meals.

The first time I ever stopped at the I80 in Walcott, IA, I went in the full service restaurant and ate. Only time I've ate in there. I ordered a Rueben sandwich and fries, and it was real, real good. Something about a Rueben, you have to know how to make it. Its something I rarely order because I've been burnt a few times, but the I80 restaurant looked like a good place, so I dove in. I was not disappointed. In one word it was awesome.

 

My favourite things at the truckstops is the classic hot hamburger with fries and gravy

 

Arlene's (ex 92, I think, I94) near Battle Creek; one heck of a small lot, but the food is good. The BBQ shack near N Little Rock,AR (down the service drive from the Petro), great 'que and good prices. Also, there was a small fuel stop/diner on US27 (if I am remembering correctly) in Indiana (north of I70); the food was good, but the homemade dessert was to die for! And Brintle's (I77, just across the VA line in NC), awesome Coconut Creme Pie!

Definitely! They also have monster sized eclairs, cream puffs and cookies there.
