I have thought about an older truck that needs work, but while I have enough general knowledge to know when a mechanic is BS'ing me, I do not have the patience or know-how to do the work myself. Quite frankly, the idea of trying to work on a brake chamber scares me with the horror stories I've heard. Also, with my asthma and allergies, typically an older truck would reek of cigarette smoke, which is a major problem for me. Some clean up well, others don't.
If I could find an older truck with a 60-series in good shape for a good price, I might consider that as well. But seeing as certain circumstances may force me into the lease-on gig, it would have to be something that a company would accept. Honestly, I'd love to combine new with old, say, a 6-71 with a modern 10-speed or 13-speed. Love the sound of those old screamin' Jimmies.

So, I'm thinking about Lone Mountain's lease purchase deal. No balloon payment, just a down payment and a structured loan installment with terms just as though I were buying a car (higher payments of course). Has anyone else had experience with this dealer?
I was also thinking about the idea of saving up $20,000, getting a loan to buy an older truck and work it to make the money to upgrade, but I have asthma and would have to watch out for buying a truck that had been smoked in (which is the norm).
So far, it seems to be pretty set that I need $10,000 to start up, including down payment, regardless of the route I choose. -
You never drove a 6-71 have you.
The smoke and blowby would kill you, but you would make the swift drivers feel like they have a large car.Call_Me_The_Breeze Thanks this. -
I guess not. LOL. It WOULD be kinda cool though... Always wondered what it would be like. Guess now I know. I remember hearing they would outrun anything on level ground, but wouldn't pull a hill. Were they really THAT bad?
I've seen some setups with single and twin turbos, wonder if that's the secret to getting them to pull a hill? *shrugs* Today's game is all about fuel economy now, though, and I don't think such a setup could win with today's rules. Too bad, I love me some old iron. -
A 6-71 Detroit has 238 horsepower, no torque. They don't do hills, except down hill.
Call_Me_The_Breeze and fargonaz Thank this.
