Land Star is good because of the freedom of the load board.

We have a friend who got his title from company that hubby is getting his truck from now. Friend is now at LS almost a year I think. He is very happy and making good money. He is not a fast driver either and prefers light loads and does not own his own trailer. Only been driving 3 years too which is a bit less than hubby. We were told what friend has been averaging and since he is new to LS it is good money. If we were making that here I could pay off cars within a year from what we owe on them now. We have one year left till truck is paid for then we switch. Already in market for trailer so we are set.

Yes, I am happy to have me. I'm my boss.
There is money to be made but I bet 75% or more of O/Os could make as much or more money as a company driver at certain companies.
I didn't decide to be an O/O because of the money but because of the freedom. I've had 25 days off in the last 60 days. Not many company jobs would allow that. I work when I want & I go where I want.
There might be a few specialized niches where an O/O might make "great" money. But then again everybody has a different definition of "great" money. From my perspective the only way to make great money is to run a fleet of trucks.CorsairFanboy, csmith1281 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
This is a no. My hubby worked at OD which makes the top driver salery for company even higher than many union company. It is no where near what he makes now as a l/ O. Most company drivers make .45 a mile hubby was at.72 cents a mile when he left OD. So now way you can make as much as company.
Now what is True many OO that are leased onto companies are getting major ripped off at $1 a mile. How the heck do you run your truck at that when dispatched. As a lease purchase Operator hubby makes more than that now. Admittedly there are slow weeks and bad runs but still most time he is getting over $1 a mile since he's loaded.
It's a shame what companies do to drivers and they allow it. I heard of one charging . 24 a mile that's nuts people loosing their homes over it. Drivers under contract and are new don't know better. It's a shame.Last edited: Sep 20, 2017

Mmmmmmm. Only way I could make what I do now is if I was like #1 through 5 at some union shop, or had been pulling a gas can or other hazardous tanker for someone for 15 years or so.
I'll bet there are more than a few people that come to LS and F it up. I mean they don't suffer fools very well. Probably just as easy to be shown the door for CSA points or log problems as anything. I've done the ratchet jaw thing with a few guys that have been here for over 10 years, and several had been terminated, done their year away, and came back.
There is a lot to do. And no where is it more " Always the drivers fault. " Than here. By that I mean a lot of people make mistakes. Even some of the good agents. Shippers, etc.
It's all on you to check, double check, re-check everything. Cause the bottom line is no one cares. Your on time, product in tact, or your not.
I mean some of the dog food I carry, has unbelievable amounts of skilled labor in it. They really want it without the bags being torn, etc. You will hate being behind me on curvy roads when I have my dog food, bottle water, salt, and flour loads. Cause I don't throw the truck around at all.
There was a kid showed up at a marshaling yard where there was a Landstar Army. He has one trailer door coming open, and placards still on two sides of the trailer, and almost takes the mirror of dudes truck next to me. Long story short, that was about 3 weeks ago, I'll be amazed if he's still here.
I'm taking a few days off. Like maybe 4 of them. I'm tired.
Unless.
The really STOOPID load pops up.
It's hard not to book myself. LOL. I am tired though. The one agent calls me with loads that are pretty darn STOOPID, and when she does, it's always the same thing / place ( dogfood ), I drop whatever and go. But like I'm sitting here hoping she doesn't call for this week lol.
But there are so, so, many things you have to make right, to keep it rolling smooth.csmith1281, fargonaz, tucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
RUH ROH.
Might be boarding the Landstar gravy train. Looks that way for sure. Fine predicament I've gotten myself into now.

Waitin' down this road.
I'm pickin' up,
Whatever is mine.........."
woooooo ooooooooRStewart Thanks this. -
I see your point. But bad example. Ray Kroc stole McDonald's right out from under those two guys. He already knew what was going on. I don't think anyone's asking for secrets around here or trying to steal restaurants (loads). They just wanna know the potential. And the potential is up to each individual.CorsairFanboy and csmith1281 Thank this.
