I have a unique, checkered past. Is my OTR career over before it begins?

Carolina cargo, western express, and abelene seem to hire pretty bad felons from what i've read (not that i care i'm not a felon) Dude on youtube drives for abalene likes to brag about he's a 2 time felon and been driving for abalene.

You probably wouldnt have wanted me behind the wheel either. When i was 16 and 17 years old i thought every car i had was a race car , heck i am lucky to be alive when thinking back on it. The only advantage i had was there wasnt as many cars on the road in those days.

Just a little update on my situation for anybody that may be searching for info having to deal with similar circumstances, i called all of the companies that chinatown listed (thank you, btw). All but two or three of them either weren’t hiring in my area or weren’t taking on student drivers. But the ones i talked to, i fully disclosed my details and they all said that it is something they can work with.

So, after being initially bummed/deterred after my interview with Melton (after much research, that is who i wanted to work for), I am now feeling more confident in my job search. I just need to find the right flatbed company that is hiring in my area (south Texas).

For those that have been judgemental, i get it. My research just wasnt showing me much for my particular situation so i knowingly put myself out there for advice. I hope if someone else has a similar past and is wondering what their options are, they find this somewhat helpful.

But again, while they might not find it in a background check, they most likely will, and lying to them about it will probably find yourself getting called in and dismissed shortly after starting your new job, while being upfront will in the very least leave no stressful surprises.

    Thank you for the responses.

I'm thankful that Swift took a chance on me. They might on you too, especially since it is so far in the past, and you'll already have your cdl.

Pull your mvr, DAC and do a thorough background check on yourself. Whatever appears on those, put them in your application. Whatever doesn't, don't include it. That'll be sufficient and you're pretty likely to get hired on.

I think 30 years ago people died a lot more, on the job, on the road, etc. No one obsessed over safety in the past like they do now. Or so I've heard.

I know I wasn't around but I know that driving drunk wasn't even really even considered a problem until a couple decades ago. People probably killed other drivers piss drunk and walked cleaner than he did back then.

Yep back in the early 80s when i was a kid my father drove with 40oz of bud between his legs and a roach in the tray in the good old chevy caprice classic. Slow ride take it easssy lol Back when hitch hiking was common too he did that with me too. I was born in 78 before baby car seats existed too and i'm here 40 years later. The problem now is the roadways are much more crowded and full of idiots.

Practice a short narrative that explains it in easy to understand terms. This should include your own acknowledgement that you were young then and you've regretted it every since. This worked for me.
