Did you check or change the speed sensor on the transmission, next to the tail shaft?

yes, twice I swapped out the speed sensor at trans, once with a new sensor then with a known good sensor.
do you know where the wires go after trans ? do they go the that black box under the fuses ? I don't understand why the odometer works and not the speedometer ? thanks

thank you for your reply , I don't know what you mean Opti ilde relay ? where is it located ... my odometer works but the speedometer does not. I bought a new speedo and tach head from Volvo still the same
I think it's in the printed C.board but not sure, Volvo wants over $2000. for the dash cluster. not much $ just to throw a dart and hope I hit it

I had a problem with my speedometer simular to yours and it turned out to be the actual plate that the numbers are on. It was holding the speedometer from the bottom preventing it from moving. It should be glued to the plastic under it, but it had come apart somehow. I used some glue to stick it back on the plastic and problem fixed
