Regs allow you to go over as much as 2 hrs for road, weather, or traffic conditions that could not have been known to the dispacther when load was dispatched. Not for HOS purposes. Also, you still cannot go past your 14 hr to use this 2 hrs.

Also, safe haven is a term that applies to hazmat division 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3 loads ONLY. That post was wrong all the way around

That term has to be one of the most miss-used terms in all of trucking!

Quite simply, I tell them I can't legally drive and they would be conspiring to violate federal law. At least, that's what I used to tell them. Now I just line 5 and park if necessary. Doesn't alert the company to a violation and if you look at the actual graphical log(which at this time is basically all DOT looks at when they do a log inspection on elogs) it looks like you were off duty at the time. Hell, my company wouldn't even be any wiser. Actually had an after hours person send a message through the Qualcomm to do so.)

But really if I have ever KNOWN I would go into violation, I send a message before there is a violation that says I have x amount of time and no suitable or safe parking; that I'm going into violation in x amount of time and that the nearest potential solution is x distance, please advise). They never respond anyway usually. Just drive and find a place to park. Even if it requires you to drive an hour. No scales in sight? Roll until you find parking.

There is a provision that allows driving beyond your 11 to complete a load that could normally be expected to begin and end on the same day under normal conditions, but some extenuating circumstance beyond the control of the driver or carrier occurred--caveat being that it can't have been something that they reasonably could have known. For instance, it snowed in Wyoming is no excuse if snow was forecast. No snow in the forecast but a blizzard hits Vail pass and shuts it down for a few hours, when no snow was forecast, is ok. Finish the load but you still can't drive beyond 14. Likewise a major accident that occurs in front of you and couldn't have been predicted or planned for, that also would qualify. A planned road closure would not.

Don't ask for permission to park just do it. Lots of times no one will say anything at all. As long as you don't park in a bad spot where your in everyones way.
