I have been an O/O for most of the last 10 years (except when I got off the road to go back to college). I am going to expand my little business in the spring with another truck and trailer.
Here's my biggest concern, finding a professional driver. With so many loud-mouth, brain-dead, steering wheel holders around. Where do I look?
Expansion time.

Maybe you could start with a better attitude!
BoyWander and Steel Dragon Thank this. -
Lower standards to attract employees? No.

Find a rookie and train him to drive the way you think he should be trained.
Puppage Thanks this. -
That's not too far off from what I have been thinking.

Yea, you got to raise them. It takes a lot of work and patience and most will leave you. If you can keep 1 out of 4 that's perty good.
-
That's the problem. The cost of hiring a driver who doesn't stay is ridiculous. And drivers wonder why wages are so low...

Lease on a truck owner. You don't make as much, both share the business risk.
Less office/paperwork requirements.
When I had both, I used word of mouth.
Good luck.fargonaz, 77fib77, bulldawg trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
The thing that adds to the equation is there are actually some really good paying company jobs. You have to know where to look and most drivers with experience know where to look.
As someone else stated I would go the route of bringing on an owner op. Would be nice for us guys that are not ready go own our own to have more options.Last edited: Oct 22, 2017

Have you not been paying attention? Good drivers are like hen’s teeth. Those who are good generally get stupid and become an o/o. My first choice would be a good o/o. I have to agree with @xsetra. Good luck however you do it.
