I noticed you never replied to my question. In the interest of not losing another night's sleep perhaps you can clarify if your post on "getting stupid" was directed at my pic. I'm just a bundle of nerves here wondering....

Perhaps ol Spy made his comment in anticipation of the stupid braindead comments that seem to permeate every forum on the truckersreport. In that case, we should thank him and move on.

“But Six, what if he were talking about my pic?”

That load has the tendency to spread. Even with pipe stakes. Load was delivered and there’s no pics of you on the side of the road with the load sliding off the wagon. Mission accomplished. On to the next episode.

I do appreciate that first pic with the ingots, however. Tricky load for the people that don’t read the Bible. If that back bundle was butter up to the first, it wouldn’t require a penalty strap.

NOTE to lurkers: Now, we are not saying that you can or cannot put more securement. The green and white Bible is a set of regs. The religious man looks for regs. That’s why we stated the regs. The spiritual man is looking for the purpose of securement. What is the purpose of the securement? To SECURE the load against ANY forward, back, side to side, and up and down movement.
One day the DOT may ask you the regs. Tell him the regs. One day, the DOT will ask you why did you SECURE the load a certain way. Tell him the purpose of your securement.

I count 4 chains on the deck between the two photos as well. Does anybody have details on what led to playing 52 card pickup with steel beams on the interstate?

I bet you a steak dinner with your adult beverage of choice that if you was to walk around the truck stop and ask the flatbedders why they secured their load that way the responses would range from 'its what the regs say, this is how my trainer showed me, my company said to do it this way' 1 guy might be able to talk about the physics behind his securement. The average joe just doesn't have a good understanding of the concepts of securement.

I agree and it's sad, I've asked and you're right in my experience.

Instead of reading the Bible for themselves, they take what someone else says as gospel. How can I bring that A Game if I am unwilling to invest in my own career?

I've always been a student of my profession. I truly enjoy it (most days) and I like to be informed (that's how I found this website originally) but honestly it's always came easy to me. When I've trained guys I tried to explain to them the principles behind what we're doing. Generally if you restrain the load properly you'll meet all the other requirements.

This is the mentality I've brought to our classroom orientation. Rather than just telling the drivers what to do, I try to explain why we do it and the forces behind the tiedown systems. In the past year I've been doing orientation, I've learned a lot about the average truck driver's ability to learn.

I actually just spent the last two weeks completely redoing my cargo securement Power Point presentation, giving it a more cohesive structure, and logical order of topics, than just general information to "get it done".

I think my company picked me to do this because they knew I take it seriously.

Sometimes I think I might like that job, but truthfully it would probably be frustrating for me. I find that I end up doing it myself, generally help gets in my way.

Oxbow, SAR, Zeviander and 2 others Thank this.
