Thank you for all the replies. This is very helpfull.
So lets talk "NOW"....Its not about miles- GET THAT OUTTA YOUR HEAD RIGHT NOW- Smart drivers work Less miles- DO NOT use a mileage table to predict your earnings as a potential truck owner.....
/\ that right there is exactly what I need. To shift my mind off miles driven vs money actually paid for the load. Thank you for flipping the switch.
I'm slightly lost on why finding loads is being brought up if I am looking to drive under someone else's authority and dispatch? I am not looking to find my own loads and deal with factoring starting out hence the 10% cut for the house.
And I agree, 2017 seemed like a much much better year than 2015 but for me, and the company I am with, 2016 was also rather good. This was the flatbed period for me.
How do you feel about the $1.68 per mile estimate? I am for sure not looking to haul freight cheap, but I also don't want to assume that the $3.50 a mile prices are to stick around? Is my number a good place to count on with the expectation to be closer to $2.00? (And I realize this goes against the previous comment to get off the mileage mentality but at this instant I haven't came up with a different constant to do the math) -
Dude the first thing in successful business is not to be a partner of a friend or family member, it is a fast way to ruin a friendship or cause problems in a family.
rank and just_sayin Thank this. -
I appreciate the input but it would be great if we could stay on topic and focus on the numbers. I am way past the morals lecture. But yes, I agree, working with friends only works for a tiny percentage. If I branch off it would be separate from my mate.

First yr Insurance for a $64,000 Truck and 2010 dryvan under my own Authority is close to $1500 a month . Your mpg @ 5.5 geez doing 75 mph ?
I ran through my maintence fund quick with new injectors and trailer maintence. Long first year but trailer will be paid off and should see a dip in i surance cost . Goodluck .rank Thanks this. -
First and formost is the important decision.
What are you going to do, and where do you want to do that.
All the numbers games can be played for all your worth, they are one of the last things that should be considered.
They have no value to anything if you don’t have a plan.
The who, what, why, when and where of it all.
Answer the questions, then you can form the plan, from that you can start working to put together your equipment needs, that will drive the numbers. Sort of working it backwards. -
I use 8500 miles a month when doing the math on a proposed new carrier. If the math doesn’t work out with that low of miles, then I look else where. Then if you do actually get 12,000 miles, well then you’re making bacon.

Good good. I get that once you go O/O it's not about the miles driven but right now that is the only point of refferance I can relate to do some sort of scope. Thank you for sharing your method.
From my conservative math, it still all makes good sense to get my own rig. The ELD is an interesting point so I am waiting to see what actually happens in the last two weeks of December -
Let me take the haze out of your eyes...
Insurance on my newly minted MC is $1500/mo and I dont have a trailer. I was priced using a "ghost trailer" with 30K trailer interchange (required by coyote)
As it has been said before, and I will repeat it again.... EMISSIONS TRUCKS are not good starter trucks.
The cascadia's you are looking at will burn $8K hole in your pocket if the 1-box goes out (dpf/def related stuff)
p.s. my truck is paid off, and has been sitting since July this year as I navigated the trials & tribulations of leasing on and finally settling to getting my own MC --- to cut the crap with the other Authority owner wanting to run me like a dog (even though it's "no forced dispatch")
