hi everyone I have a question about my radio. I have a new cobra 29 with a Astatic mic and Wilson 2000 antenna. A few days ago everyone has been telling me that I’m getting out good but I sound really distant. My antenna is tuned the best I can get it about 1.4 on the low and 1.8 on the high channels. I’m not exactly an expert but I knocked the tip off the antenna my question is would that have anything to do with my problem?? Any feedback would be great!

You need to "eat" the mic on those noise canceling mics. There is a rubber lip on those, put that right up to your lip when you talk.
rabbiporkchop, Diesel Dave, Blaskowitz and 1 other person Thank this. -

As others have said, eat the mic and crank the dynamike wide open.
Knocking the ball off the end of the whip "might" increase static noise in your receiver in certain situations but will have zero effect on your transmitted audio.slim6596 Thanks this. -
None of my steel antennas have static balls on them. Some didn't even come from the factory with one.
The Wilson 500 mag-mount I just bought had one on the tip (it was actually more of an elongated cap than a ball), but I pulled it off to cut the length for tuning, then just left it off.
I always trim my steel whips from the top, since it's easier to do compared with removing and replacing the two retaining screws that hold them in the base. Of course, trimming from the top requires losing the ball.
I've never had any problems without balls (stop the laughing, NOW).lilillill Thanks this. -
I always trim from the bottom to keep the nice ball on top.

Not all whips have the Corona ball. (that's what it is called) But I agree keep it if you have it.
