Truckers plan to give Skaneateles a Dickens of a time
by Matt Michael / The Post-Standard Monday November 17, 2008, 9:40 PM
SKANEATELES, NY -- Even Scrooge couldn't have thought this one up.
On Nov. 28 -- the day after Thanksgiving and opening day for Dickens Christmas celebration in Skaneateles -- the village of Skaneateles could turn into a parking lot for about 400 trucks and tractor-trailers.
Truckers and Citizens United, a national group that represents 15,000 drivers and trucking employees, is planning a convoy and rally that will start at Exit 41 on the New York State Thruway and end in downtown Skaneateles.
Charlie Claburn, the organization's Northeast regional director, said the convoy will protest Gov. David Paterson's push to restrict truck traffic on certain rural state roads.
"When did we start living in a country where they have to tell us which way to go to get somewhere?" Claburn said.

I look at it like this, let them ban trucks. Honestly it'll hurt local business' especially those with diner's who offer good food! Truckers are probably the ones making their business successful and by not allowing truckers to stop cause they are banned from that road is gonna really hurt their business. But I guess they don't want smelly, dirty, and polluting trucks and truck drivers to park there.
I bet they are gonna cry when they don't have anymore business, hmmmmm wonder why?
Now I know why I love living in industrial blue collar small towns where most of the people are truck drivers, construction workers, or other related industry. -
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, moves in this country without some sort of surface freight. If NY wants to starve, Who are we to deny them the pleasure? I'm in this state, as I type this. I don't particularly care to be here, either. Rough roads (why is there even a toll?), poor markings, and the sevice plazas all think their food is the best in the country. I loathe the notion of coming here/through here every time. I try not to do it too often, so, in essence, I'm doing my part. I don't normally fuss about these things, but they seem to have it all, here.

The day after Thanksgiving is known across the country as Black Friday, and in the village of Skaneateles, it's also the start of Dickens' Christmas.
But this year, truckers hope it's recognized as the day they took over Skaneateles.
All I can say is WOW, the Auburn NY newspaper ran this the other day an posted it online. you are permited to post comments as well an you should read some of these comments about the protest ... In any case I only wish I could participate driving a truck but I m currently unempolyed , maybe I will stand road side an cheer the drivers on. -
I need to ask ...does this guy, protest organizer Vincent Gramuglia ,think he's Tony Saprano ? J/J.
I am all for Truckers getting the point across. I grew up in Skaneateles on Rt 41 where we had 'cannon ball express' Red Star go by and the speed limit was 60mph. We never complained ..
But now Skaneateles and the NYState have limited where the trucks can go. And Skaneateles has State Troopers giving free inspections to all truckers.
I know most of this started with garbage haulers, not covering the trailers and all but now they have grouped all together. 400 plus trucks, something the towns might need.Last edited: Nov 20, 2008

Did I miss something? I thought the Fed only allowed toll roads, if there was an alternate route to take ?
And Hwy 20 is the only logical "alternate" route. -
Hummm the trucks are going to spoil one day.... They want to spoil the rest of your life, as a driver I have used that route, mostly when I have some time to kill and want to stop and see some life outside of the truck stops... so they do not want my dollars spent in their town, NO problem! I can by-pass the town and the Heck with them! Now why should I drive around the town if there is not a good route, and I have to pay for the other route that is much longer... So will they drop the tolls on the NYTPKE... Is there another option?
