Thanks, but I was hoping someone has already tied them into their floodlights on the baxk of their cab, and traced the wires so that i dont have to spend a ton of time tearing into this myself. I could leave it to our mobile mechanic, but he's iffy at best on timeliness. These lights should have been mounted by him last summer, but I made the brackets myself and only mounted them a couple days ago.

Nowadays with multiplex wiring etc l think I'd do what cowboy suggested. Simpler and easier in the long run. Plus if there's an issue it won't affect the oem wiring. I had lights on my steps before. I would suggest using the top step. The dirt and spray down low will have you cleaning them a lot especially the wiring. Anyways good luck and they are nice and discreetly mounted.

Are those your only utility lights? If not I would tie them into the other utility lights. I would also agree with special-k on mounting under top step. They are just too handy for debris on bottom step.

That's what I was hoping to do: tie them in. I have two factory utility lights on the back of the cab, I want them all to operate off the same switch (all of our other ones are wired that way. Only difference is, Penske wired them in at our request before we took delivery of them.).
And I suspect you're both right, I'll have to go to the top step. The down side is that the top step won't allow the light to run down the side of the trailer, the top step is mounted more to the top if the tank, while the lower is in the fat part, so the light would work better. I may see if my manager will allow mentor drill into the side of the top step and mount the light on its outer edge.

As far as I know any lighting tied into the Sam cab has strick limitations on the amount of current available, if there is more than it expects it will decide there is a fault and shut the circuit down.
On my Cascadia I know the computer shuts off the utility lights if the transmission goes into high range, it assumes that you forgot to turn them off.

I would be tempted to mount them off the triangle brace for the upper step. It looks like you made a riser so that will bring it out some. Just be sure you or someone else won't catch it on their foot climbing in. Thats where l mounted mine years ago. They were better for backing in on a angle than going straight in

20171118_080157.jpg How's this look? It's mounted on the edge of the step. I thought about the angle bracket, but it's right where I step up. Back here, it won't bother anyone (the steps for the back deck are on the other side).

Utility lights are powered at the X3 Connector Pin 7 (ground at pin 21) at the sam_cab. It is an unfused logic controlled output. Your best bet is to probably power them off a relay and have the control side of the relay hooked to your existing utility lights. That way you don't add extra draw on that circuit.
