So has anyone really noticed a slow down in the industry recently? Are drivers still seeing good miles and decent paychecks? All i hear is about how slow it is no miles no money ect, but I still pass and see thousands of trucks everyday. What do you all think?

They are just driving around empty cause they have nothing else to do??

I know its slow with what I do but I also know if I would want to work cheap I could still be working. I haven't been working much....LOL -
I see a lot more deadhead flats, but I'm moving better now (van) than in June/July.

LOL on the wagon saggin!!! I often wonder and maybe you can explain it to me?? Lets talk cheap freight. If you were and I am just throwing figures out so don't quote it ok. If you had a load and after all expenses were paid you made lets say $800 clear for the load, that would be great and we'll say perfect world. But that load was not available and you took a load that paid $150 after all expenses were paid, not so good right? But it's better than not making any money at all I would think. The company I work for would rather not start the truck unless they make what they want, but in my mind any money is better than no income at all.

Well there does come a time when you have to look at it as anything is better than nothing! I don't like it and I will bet that alot of people will say "I'll go broke first before I'll haul cheap freight". Well thats just bull!
One thing you have to keep in mind, If you hold out at first you may be able to keep your rates up. If it doesn't work you'll have to suck it up and go do it! -
ok, point taken on the rates. We will have a good load run 450 or better miles from the house and deadhead back,when there was a load we could of taken and made a little something on the way back but it did not pay what they wanted. makes no sense to me.

One thing I have to tell you. I have a friend whos got 3 trucks. Their thought was "a load on my trailer and I'm making money". That was ok back when freight was plentyful and fuel was cheap. Now that isn't working out so good for them. They got a reputation as someone who would haul anything. So when they started getting picky about the freight they hauled they started getting offered every cheap load out there to try to break them of being picky!
I'm a lucky guy, my monthly bills are pretty low. I can hold out alot longer than some people. -
Let me see if I can explain this to you in an easy way. First off there is no such thing as a BACKHAUL! I hate that word or term.
Now say that load coming back was only paying $450 TTT (To The Truck). Your thinking is well it will pay the cost of coming back. But what your not thinking about is the guys that live out that way who are usually doing that load for say $$600 TTT. Now would you want them to come over your way to haul your load for cheaper than you do?
Thats what alot of people don't think about when they get out somewhere.
That also where the term BACKHAUL came from. They always tell you "well its a load home".Badcable, Lilbit, PharmPhail and 1 other person Thank this. -

I`ve noticed things are slow.Even as a company driver I`m glad my boss sticks to his rates.It is pointless to haul anything anytime at (or below) your break even point.If you do it once it will be easier the next time.Someone will always come in and work cheaper-but they probably won`t be there long.The smaller companies can`t afford to cut rates. the bigger ones hope to make it up on volume.But, anyway back to the original question- looks like my miles have dropped 10 or more percent the last month when normally they should have picked up.All of the local papers have very few "help wanted" ads for any jobs.If you have a job-hang on-and ride as long as you can.
