im thinking about enlisting in the army for 4 yrs. to be a motor transport operator...here are the duties of a MTO...
- Reading load plans
- Checking oil, fuel and other fluid levels, as well as tire pressure
- Driving vehicles over all types of roads and terrain, traveling alone or in convoys in support of combat operations
- Keeping records of mileage driven and fuel and oil used
- Washing vehicles and perform routine maintenance and repairs
...when i get out i want to buy my own truck and become a O\O will this be a idea or will i need more experience?
my plans so far

congrats on your decision to join our nations military service
that said, lets get to the knitty gritty
3.5 years of being an army truck driver will in no way, shape or form will give you enuf experiance to get a CDL, a job at swift, let alone the experiance nessacary to be an O/O
yes it will only be 3.5 years....basic is what, 14 weeks now, then you have AIT...6 to 20 weeks depending on the school...plus a few weeks of being a holdover waitin for enuf troops to arive to start training...figure 6 months just to get trained to be a soldier
do your service, get out, use the GI Bill to fund your training at an approved CDL school, get a company job for a few years, learn what trailer you like, what the frieght lanes are, rates, expences
after a few years of tearing up someone else's truck you can think about buying one....if you have your ducks in a row and still want to do it, the SBA has special loan programs just for vets
then buy yerself a truck and go to work for yourselfLilbit Thanks this. -
im not fully set on enlisting cuz of the wars and everything it just was on my mind but my plans were going to the army and enlist as a heavy equipment operator from what i was told they also drive rigs, they have to do maintenance and everything and deal with log books etc etc....then use the GI bill to go to school for business management and after all that drive for a company four about a year of two to adjust to the civilian life, after all that go buy my own truck and construction equipment and have my business but...as of now i think that is out the question because of the war's and economy

you will not do a log book in the army, a dispatch, pmcs and pull a small trailer are about all you will do...most of the riving and hualing will be done by whatever they changed to MOS, it used to be 88M
trust me im a Staff Sergeant in the reserves
and dont let the "wars" fool ya into not joining....i have been in for almost 13 years, guard reserve and active duty
my main point is, you dont even have a CDL so dont be thinking about owning a money pit just yet
get some experiance (a few years worth at a minimum) and figure out if this is even something you WANT to do -
