I hooked it up this morning at home to test it out. It was easy peasy.

Started truck, plugged in DashLink port cable, turned my tablet Bluetooth on, paired with device, confirmed the truck I.D. info., including the odometer reading, and that was it.

I will turn off Bluetooth in the interim and continue to use the logging software as I have been until the mandate goes into place.

Please note it does not specify ELD as the protocols are different and the port does not provide them.

You're saying that BigRoad DashLink as prescribed is not legal and does NOT meet the AOBRD guidelines as described in FMCSA Section 49 Part 395.15?

Just come out and say it, if that's what you're implying. I worked in compliance for a company that used the Rand McNally ELDs connected through the diagnostic ports of our 150 trucks. In fact, I installed many of them myself and trained drivers on how to use use them.

It's interesting how Rand, to whom our company paid thousands and thousands of dollars to every year, not only for the devices that seemed to have a shelf life of only a year, as well as a very hefty user fee every month, never said anything to us about the units plugged into the data ports not meeting the FMCSA's ELD requirements ;-)

As of December 17th I will use BigRoad's DashLink system as an AOBRD for the 2 year grandfathered exception. I'll let you know if the protocol is cited as unsatisfactory to any officer during a roadside inspection, I suspect it won't be an issue.

Before you jump overboard. There is a difference in an ELD and a Aorbd. Volvo has mentioned they cannot guarantee that port will provide produce protocols for an ELD

Mark, I know there's a difference between the two, which is why I mentioned the 2 year extension of using the AOBRD vs the ELD.

I haven't jumped overboard on anything. I didn't have to purchase any hardware, etc. I've been using the BigRoad logging software on my Samsung Tablet for 2 years, I've been paying them a $15 per month subscription fee.

They raised the monthly fee to $25 when the mandate goes into effect, however, offered a pre-pay option of 15 mos for 12 mos. In addition, they sent me the DashLink cable/hardware at no cost. The system works via Bluetooth paired to the same device I've already been using.

Care to share how much one of Rand's ELD devices & hardware cost? How about the monthly subscription cost?

As far as Volvo's "mention" that they cannot "guarantee" the port may not be adequate for ELD protocols, has the FMCSA issued a guideline stating any AOBRD/ELD device connected through the port of a Volvo will not be recognized or accepted by them?

    No, they haven't...

No but Volvo says they cannot guarantee it.

As for pricing you can call RM fleet and ask them. There is information on their website. Nothing hidden.
