Got the class A license...will driving class B to start "hurt" me down the road?

    Hey all,

Long time lurker, first post. I did a few searches but didn't find this question addressed.

Just got my Class A. Looking for jobs, have a few Class A interviews coming up. Also looking at Class B jobs. I am just so ready to get to work and I will gladly drive Class B to get the paycheck, especially as a new driver I am just looking to get my foot in the door. I should mention that while OTR was the original plan, some family things came up immediately before trucking school and I now need to stay local (home daily) or out 1-2 nights a week at most.

Question: Let's say I get a Class B job...and let's say in a year I want to move on to something bigger and better. Am I going to be at a serious detriment when applying for Class A jobs? As in, will having driven only Class B in my first year hold me back from getting a Class A job (even though my license is Class A)?

Many thanks for your thoughts :)

What's your location? City, State since you wanna stay local.
@Chinatown can give a list once we know where to point you to.

As for worrying about it holding you back it will not. Worst case is simply this time doesn't count as needed experience and you will start class A work as the same as anyone with 0 experience.

    Dan.S and Chinatown Thank this.

You can still get a Class-A job. Some companies will require a refresher course and some even offer that themselves. Some Class-A jobs are home daily.
    Where is your location?

    Dan.S Thanks this.

depeneds on where you live and what kind of work is going on locally. I have a class A with all endorsements. When I got my class A, I went straight into class b hauling for a little while but then started with another company with no experience pulling trailer and heavy equipment. They also have a feel for you though when you walk through the door and talk to you if that makes any sense. You will have to ride with someone for a day to verify you can pull a trailer and also drive a truck which most will be manual trans. Construction companies locally require no track record of your use of class a. Its one of those things "hey, you have a class A?" awesome, your hired. Now iam an owner operator in the dump trucking business so it doesn't really matter anymore but its nice to know you have a class A to fall back on. Just to reiterate, in my own personal opinion and observation, IT depends on where you are at and what you doing. Driving a class b truck with a class A license is far better than having a Class A and not driving at all and getting no experience. I

I am in West Chester, PA. No permanent living situation yet (just moved back from Wyoming of all places), so I've got some mobility. As long as I am generally close to this area (50+/_ miles or so) I can make my family situation work.

And yeah, that worst case scenario was what I was afraid of mostly...
