I'm thrilled to see your posts, Steve & Lo. Sounds like you are very content with Prime.
My question: Wife and I are going through CDL school at local community college in West Michigan starting 1/5/09. How much experience is necessary with Prime before the company will allow you on a lease, and will they let 2 rookies drive together starting out?
Thanks very much in advance. Glad to see you're enjoying this adventure called life!

Prime will not allow 2 "Rookies" as you called yourselves, to get right in a truck. All new drivers(less than 1 yr OTR) are evaluated and sent out with an experienced driver trainer for (up to) approx. 60K miles. This takes about 3-4 months. At that time, they are evaluated again....and, if they meet the qualifications....they are allowed to get in their own truck. Prime stresses that the new drivers learn the ropes before turning them loose......some complain that the process is too long......others say it isn't long enough.....Myself.....I think they have one of the best training programs in the industry. PERIOD. And, my wife....I think would agree.
I wish I had better news for you.....but, that's the way they do it.
There are companies that will throw you out there and turn you loose as soon as you get through their orientation if you already have a CDL. But, I think this is an accident waiting to happen. There is a lot to know in this profession. Good luck in your training. -
Hey Steve & Lo, glad to hear things are going well. I was getting ready to hit the road again (after being off it for about a year) and Prime has given me the green light (where a lot of companies haven't, thanks to my time off the road). Just waiting to hear if I can skip training and go straight in as a 1st seat driver. Otherwise I have to put in a month; that isn't a long bit of time, but I want to work to my full earning potential right away.
I was thinking of starting as a company driver and then moving to a lease driver spot (I have had experience as an Owner-Op before); my thinking was that I could learn the ropes before diving into the deep end. What are your thoughts? I had wanted to go in on the tanker side, but they are not hiring for tanker div. right now, so I will go back to pulling the old chill wagon.
Take care and keep in touch! -
Steve, noticed you were in my neck of the woods (Portland) doing your Albertsons load- oops, I meant laundry. My question is how are the solo drivers doing at Prime? Drive Safe

Some of our single drivers are staying as busy as they want....others are doing some complaining.....it all depends on the area....the NEast...sucks for some guys.....others are killin' it..... I think it has a lot to do with driver attitudes.....the guys bi***ing.....are the same ones that complain when things are good. One thing about it.....now is not the time to be sittin' around the truckstops....you better be gettin' all you can.
We've got to get our 100,000+ cantaloupes off here in sunny Fort Lauderdale.....then it's off to Daytona Beach....and the condo for Thanksgiving! And believe me....we have a lot to be thankful for. The Lord has truly blessed us this year.
We hope everybody has a Safe and wonderful Thanksgiving! -
I pulled this out of another thread.....One titled Freight Sucks.....and I started to post it there.....but, I feel if I'm gonna talk about the benefits of being a Lease/Op at Prime.....then I'll put it on MY thread... AND...All you O/O's that are out there....you DO have options....
Don't mean to get on anybody's toes.....but, we take a lot of Flak from some on this board that AUTOMATICALLY ###-U-ME that Prime is only here to screw the people that work with them....that's right....We work WITH Prime....not FOR them... -

You guys are only reporting your experiences and results. IMO the thing is that we attract to ourselves a lot of what we get with our attitudes and beliefs. W/O getting into a buncha psychobabble, a human being has a built in tendency to prove that what they believe is true and so we set out to make it so either consciously or unconsciously. And we usually do. With your positive attitudes and good character, demonstrated by the restraint you use here when idiots attack, you attract good results to yourselves. Simple and true. We all have a choice over our beliefs, so if we want better results from our lives we gotta first believe that the results we want are possible and available to us. When drivers get on here and say all L/O plans suck or all companies are out to rip you off thats almost certainly what they will get.
Interesting that you write about big company discounts because last night I was cruising some of the big guy websites about leasing info for O/O's. I never realized the number of benifits and discounts that are available to L/O's and O/O's with some of them. I was particularly impressed with Schneider's discounts and support of contractors, or at least what I was reading about it. It is too easy to simply look at the rate on a load and discount the true operating costs that can be reduced with the fuel, tire, maintenance and other discounts available to contractors for the big guys that guys like me who load from boards and brokers will never see. And then there's the occasional slow or no pay... how many miles do I have to run to make up for an unpaid load? Probably takes 3 loads to recover from one bad one. yikes!
Musta had too much caffiene today... -
Yeah, Markv.....I'm glad that when we turn in a load....(as long as we get it in on time)....we can count on that money being in the bank on payday. Yeah, it kinda sucks to see what it could be if we did it ourselves....but, then again.....I've got some buddies that go through some pretty big hassels sometimes. I think it's a compromise situation....if you're willing to get a little bit less.....A LOT of the stress is removed from the situation. And to us....THAT'S HUGE. Momma don't like stressin' bout money! Have a good Thanksgiving!
