I used a Garmin for 3 years and never had a problem. That includes going into DC, Baltimore, and NYC on a regular basis. I check my route with streets and trips and the atlas before leaving but never have used them enroute except after shutting down planning my next day.

If your gps sends you on a street that says low clearance use your brain to change directions and the gps will immediately reroute you.

    always worked for me.

Alot of these guys are right. You definitely need to know how to read atlas's and maps but 1 of the first things i do before heading anywhere unfamiliar is CALL AND ASK. ALWAYS. Other than that i'm in the same boat as you. I've been driving for 5 years now and am about to purchase my first GPS system. My wife has a Garmin nuvi for her car. It is a simple to use,and fairly reliable system. I've been doing alot of research the last couple of days to find the best GPS for truckers and I think im going w/ the Garmin.Affordable and easy to use
