You've got to figure in the whole enchilada. By that I mean the health benefits, retirement, vacation, personal days, working weekends, wear and tear on your body, etc. More likely than not, most LTL jobs will trump just about any food service gig on these measures. The only question is if you can do your time on the bottom of the board until you move up the seniority list.

To further clarify for OP and any other newbie to LTL. I don't know any LTL that doesn't dish out runs based on seniority - at least for linehaul. Union shop or not, you're gonna have to earn your time. Union shops typically run a 'hog board,' where the top guys can switch over from linehaul to P&D without losing seniority. They might run just one seniority board. Other LTLs will have seniority for linehaul, and seniority for P&D, and you can't flip flop without starting over at the bottom of the seniority list.

OP, it's best to compare P&D with food service, the latter being a job which is much more physical. You need to ask yourself how much 'work' you wanna do. Linehaul is cake, but it's a lifestyle to adapt to with working mostly nights. Some l/h drivers can work days, but it's not the norm. A lot of LTLs will hire without experience, depending on where you live. Location is more important than experience usually, when it comes to job opportunities. Personally, I'd go for Fed Ex Freight, SAIA, Estes, or ODFL for LTL.

Respectfully saying this, Obviously still low on the totem pole brother. Only gets better in time. I wouldn't brag about that. Know your audience. Apples and Oranges dude. Food/Beverage will never be same top out pay. Sure as heck they earn that pay.

But how much is health insurance at those companies? How many where the driver is home every night and off every weekend? How many of those companies offer a pension plan? 2 weeks of paid vacation right off the bat PLUS a week of personal/sick time? Overtime?

This is why you have to look at the total compensation package thst many of these LTL jobs offer.

Majority of the major foodservice companies offer just what you put down. I started with two weeks vacation a week of sick pay and three days of personal time. Off every weekend and one day a week home every night. A generous match on 401k (which in my opinion Is just as good as a pension because I can control it) and I have decent health insurance (If there is such a thing lol)

Sorry but home every night is ALOT different than home only 1 night per week. Then add in the toll those jobs take on your body.

To that I would say, to each their own. If that's what makes you happy, then that's all that really matters. My only point here is to give people interested in these lines of local work a fair comparison so they can make a more informed decision.

First off, i'm not at top rate yet---and still on track to make 60+

But my point was, what do you have to do to make the 60K?

For example today, yes i did have two inside deliveries, BUT one was two folding tables into a store---and the store people helped. And then the other was a trashcan and barbeque grill into an apartment leasing office. All the other stops were dock or forklift stops. So, that's like 4 boxes i had to move vs. 400+ boxes doing food/beverage service. Plus, i didn't have to deal with those types of customers----because based on my extensive experiences doing both LTL and Food, Food and beverage customers tend to be the laziest and often rudest turkeys out there.

Also, alot of times i'm just sitting around waiting for the customer to unload me and i'm watching the 'Tube vs. humping boxes and straining myself trying to navigate narrow, slippery isles doing what the store owners should be doing themselves......
