Today I got a real stab in the back. Picked up a relay, drove 20 miles to a live unload. Made only $7 for four hours. That was minimum wage in the early nineteen seventies.
Leaving Schneider for the second time

When I was at the live unload I spoke with another driver. He drove local, but doing the same type of work. He was home every night and was paid by the hour. I drove over the road for $18.50 an hour once. When it hits time and a half over 40, nothing beats that kind of money. I'm going to try and find hourly pay again (and local work). I'm tired of the lies from OTR companies.
diesel drinker and Lonesome Thank this. -
I once "did a favor" for my outfit by running an clean empty from Houston to a Nalco in Sugarland, Texas, dropping it in their lot, and picking up a dirty tank to take back to the Q-Wash. Easy. Quick. At least that's what the sell was. I left the yard and got back 6 hours later for 8 dollars take-home. That weaned me of doing favors.Last edited: Dec 9, 2017
BigHossVolvo and shogun Thank this. -
Wrong! Line haul beats that kind of money to death. It's not even close.

The problem is not so much otr co's, but these mega co's... This is why they can't keep nobody and they don't care yet they scream driver shortage... there is not a driver shortage is just A shortage of drivers willing to put up with their BS... Just find you a real company and not one of these Mega training wheel companiesSurfer Joe, bamamac, BigHossVolvo and 2 others Thank this.

If it's a 2017 I would think it's a warranty issue and you should take it to the dealer and let them fix it.

If you let them take advantage of you they will at Schneider. First off, $7 for a 20 mile run isn't even the correct pay scale for a short haul at Schneider. For any run less than 25 miles you're supposed to get $25 flat pay plus your normal mileage rate times the 20 miles. So realistically assuming the $7 was your mileage pay plus $25. Not say $32 is worth half your day but still that's what it's supposed to be.
Now where Schneider will get you in this instance is the fact you picked up a relay at a terminal. Schneider will use the argument that "since you picked up a relay and you didn't actually pick up the load from the shipper you aren't entitled to short haul pay".
Yeah, when I worked there it took one blow up at the pathetic pay when they gave me that excuse. After that argument they never again tried to take away short haul pay on relays because they knew I had a brain, which indicates that they are consciously trying to nickel and dime "dumb" drivers and drivers that just don't speak up for themselves.Last edited: Dec 9, 2017

Learn this lesson early in your trucking career: Look out for your money first, then the company second, especially with a mega. You are the commodity here, you live in West Virginia which has plenty of freight. The big companies will always treat you impersonally because the don’t know you at all.
Get your time in, move on, and don’t look back. I have never regretted quitting a job that didn’t treat me well. If drivers are a dime a dozen, then dispatchers are worthless.tlalokay and BigHossVolvo Thank this.
