My dad retired from CF in 1992 after 39 years with them and various other and all now defunct teamsters companies. He was out of the Big Flats, NY (Elmira/Horseheads) terminal doing an overnight pup doubles run to Buffalo and back when he left.

The Rise and Fall of Emery Air Freight Part I
In 1997 Emery Air Freight won a billion dollar contract for 52 months to handle the priority mail for the US Post Office.
This contract though while worth a lot of money wasn't without it's headaches.
It was Christmas 1997 and the economy was booming and Emery Air Freight had the contract to handle all the big time 1-2 day priority mail shipments.
While the contract was worth a billion dollars Emery Air Freight needed infrastructure which they didn't have so they had to build a mail sorting facility and they had to build a hub. There hub for this thing was in New Jersey near New York City.
Emery also had to hire workers and paid money during the Yankee's game's to tell people that Emery was hiring for the old air mail contract and to come on down and apply.
Well all that stuff costs money and once you start building, buildings and paying money for radio advertisements and all that jazz the money goes quick.
To be continued... -
