Insurance is a crap shoot these days. I have had my own authority since 2002 and have not had any claims in years, still paying $18,000 a year for 1 tractor trailer car hauler. $1 million public liability, $300,000 cargo and physical damage on only the trailer. I have been with Great West, Northern, and many others over the years. Still better than my brother, paying $25,000 for the same coverage in Pennsylvania because he has only been on his own for three years.
$12,000 or more for a startup with their own authority is about what the market is bearing these days. Have you tried OOIDA? They can help general freight guys, although I am not a fan of their insurance department personally it may be worth a shot.
Only Progressive?

Holy SMOKES! That is what I paid years ago up here in Michigan, $6000 for 1 million cargo and liability! I had a quote around 5 months ago, and the best I could find was $12,500 for the year, 1 million... #### lucky, that was a great deal. Intrastate... Never mind...
cmrdev Thanks this. -
That was for a tri axle dump truck

I saw that... I was getting ready to move to PA too... I already brought up a real estate site...

I was class A hauler for construction company but was also equipment operator. Company went under and filed for bankruptcy. At 42 years old, I said to myself im not working for anyone anymore and always dreamed about owning a preemmision 379. Wish i started this gig years ago. but oh well. yeah depending on where you live, I live near a lot of construction and a lot of quarries. 40 hour week I bring in 3600-4k a week. 100 bucks in fuel a day. 50 hour weeks will come in the springLast edited: Dec 27, 2017

I probably shouldn't kid around about it I should just buy a tri-axle. I have a lot of experience with dump trucks.
Until you (me, anyone starting) have more seniority, the tri-axle probably won't work as long through the year as the tractor. It always seems like there are more repairs on a dump truck than a tractor, too.
But the insurance is sooo much more reasonable.
$14,000 just to get into the game... that's a lot of clams!Justrucking2 Thanks this. -
3 month slow down in the winter. But play your cards right, you will have made enough money in one season to take a few months off. Dump trucking is actually a ton of fun. Usually rolling with a bunch of other trucks, talkin trash on cb all day. Goin different places everyday locally. hauling different material. Back home at your house everyday by 4 oclock. Job sites will only mess a truck up if you hire someone else who doesn't care about your truck. I creep around in first gear plus I have air bags. Not a good choice in truck. I had to have this truck. If you want to work and make some money and not break anything, buy a nice mack rd for 30 grand. You couldn't break one of those if you triedJustrucking2 Thanks this.

There are opportunities here in Michigan, I have friends working on more that a few job sites, they always call... Mike, you should do this and that... I may just take their calls more seriously, as I know there is money to be made out there.

Just renewed with Progressive. Going on my 3rd year.
The independent agent I work with got me a couple of other quotes, no one else was within 2k of them.
My premium was $7458 for a 2016 truck, 2016 trailer, 100k cargo & 1mil limits on GL.
Domicle, mvr & credit score plays a big part in rates, obviously. -
I pay about 32,000 for two trucks year. Have one driver with points and my cdl 2 years. Don’t run cheap freight, do as much maintenance you can yourself including tires.
