Yes, CF was one of the worst companies for truck performance. With that being said
Back in the 1980's most fleets speced engines rated below 350 horsepower. Most fleets today are 400+ hp. Engine technology and performance characteristics changed a lot in the 90's with the advent of electronic engine controls. The pre-electronic engines used mechanically controlled fuel systems, primitive turbo and after cooling systems. These old mechanical motors had very narrow torque and horsepower curves, along with relatively low peak power, so the driver really had to "drive" the truck. The Cummins KTA 600 was the big power engine of that era despite having 600 hp the torque was only 1650 ft lb's at a narrow rpm range. Todays Cummins ISX set at the midrange power setting of 450 hp produces the same torque as the old KTA600 over a larger rpm range with less cubic inch displacement. The point being is the guys who drove those old trucks earned their money.

 

The ex GI trailer is neat, I'm seeing less and less of those out west. Another company lost to industry consolidation .

 

Mike,you mentioned about having tariff books and calendars in every office,CF was also huge in giving out and selling all kinds of nick nacks,clothes,toys,jewelry,pens,golf balls,and similar stuff. Every year they would send us a catalogue all kinds of CF crap and clothes. Gave out lots of award stuff,too. Go to ebay and type in Consolidated Freightways,and you'll be amazed at all the junk that's still floating around after all these years. I still have CF pens,a toy set of doubles,some t-shirts somewhere,and a CF jacket from the 80's hanging in my closet,that I don't think I can fit in anymore.
Also,I seriously thank for your time in rehashing all of this CF stuff,and I'm glad there are still some guys interested in the older days of trucking. I'm proud that I worked for those old teamster operations,and have nothing but great memories of Consolidated Freightways.I still think it was the best trucking company I was ever associated with,but that was back in the 70's,80's,much simpler times,and we all know things have changed,but not always for the better,IMHO. Keep up the good work,I enjoy it.

 

Sorry to hear things didn't work out. For whatever it's worth to you let me offer a personal observation on such matters- I didn't get married until I was 37 and I didn't have my first kid until I was 38. Looking back I'm happy I didn't make any big life long commitments when I was in my 20's and early 30's.

 

I'm being quite due to my less than stellar track record on marriages lol

 

Look on the bright side Mike, you are making progress. I held out as long as I possibly could before I got married at 46. We had been living together for 10 years, so it was really only a formality.
I wouldn’t trade the single days of my 20’s and 30’s for any amount of money. I had more fun than I care to talk about and got most of my hard living out of my system before my wife and I met. Many of the women I “dated”, I was testing to see if they were wife material.
Have patience and eventually the right one will come out of nowhere. Just when you think you won’t find one the perfect one comes around.
Don’t wait for one that you have all the same interests with because even the best relationships need space apart from each other. My wife and I have widely different interests but we have a strong bond together on the things that matter. She has been in my rig one time and could care less about it, but I don’t really need to see her sales goals for the month, so it works just fine.
