Hi I am new to this owner operator stuff and was just wondering if anyone makes money doing it. I am working for a company hauling locally but is there any money in it after all expenses?

Take this with a grain of salt, since I'm not an O/O.......
Seems to me if there wasn't any $$ in it, I doubt anyone would do it; I'm sure it's like any other profession, where some do very well and others not so much.

If there wasn't any money to be made, no one would be doing it.

There are way too many variables to determine wether or not there's money in it. Are you currently a driver looking to pull the trigger? Or did you jump right in?

I see guys running around locally doing cans for 45$ an hour. Definitely no money in it doing it that way. Also see guys bringing in decent revenue, but they pay out the arse to not get their hands dirty, and there isnt much left for them at the end of the month either.

How hard are you willing to work and how dirty are you willing to get? If your answer is "as much as it takes" then yep there's a bit of money in it! Just a question as to wether or not its worth it to you.

Shed some light on what you wanna do with some specific numbers and I'm sure the wealth of knowledge on here will have plenty to say, encouraging or discouraging as it might be.

We jumped in and have been doing it for 2 years now. But we have had some bad luck and had to replace the engine in our first truck then we sold it for a different one and then that motor blew too. But it just seems lately we are going backwards and as hard as I work it just doesn't seem like we are getting ahead.

Does it just take time or are we screwed? Ha

If you replaced the engine in your first truck why did you get rid of it

I'm not an o/o but have done the math, and for a highway guy there is no reason that you should not, after all expenses, bring home between 5 and 7 thousand. If you can't make at least that, then I wouldn't even pursue it.

If you are going Highway with a medium size company, esp Reefer, it is definitely worth it. I've been crunching the number for a year and a half, and you need to go get a new truck, either financed or lease purchase, write off as much as possible, and get on your companies fuel program. IE my company gets daily pricing for our 2 fuel cards, so we know what the pre-IFTA pricing is, for all the stations in our lanes. I've asked to be added to this email chain, even as a company driver, so I can get a better fuel bonus and develop those habits for when I go O/O. Used trucks are hit and miss, but most will need repairs + financing equal to a new unit; when broken down per month (with less tax write-offs). I'm currently driving a nicely equipped 2018 International LT, with a cummins X15 and all the good stuff, super nice spec, its costing my company around $2700/mo Financed thru Ideal Lease with Extended Warranty. On an 11-3 schedule doing Canada OTR and Pacific NW, West Coast US, the company is making money like crazy! Got my first profit share/performance bonus thingy ever. They will also be raising the CPM for all drivers shortly, as they want to retain everyone we currently have.

That being said, stuff can go wrong, tires are so #### expensive, a tank of bad fuel or DEF can really screw things up. But overall, if you are with a company you can trust, and they are getting along with their customers/brokers, its not a bad time to go O/O.

Also, no dis-respect to anyone who starts off with a used truck. After everything I've seen, more guys go under with used trucks than new trucks

    C&DTransport Thanks this.
