I cant speak for him. But I pull open deck freight,.. and from my experience,.. the whole west cost rates are not that desirable unless you can score some direct customers.
I do some Oregon and Washington state,.. but never in the winter. And not because of the weather or road conditions. But because of how the market is and whats moving. I can do good going in and out of Oregon in the summer but wintertime I would have trouble finding good paying loads going back east.
With you living there and wanting to get back home,.. I just dont see that working out too well unless you know where to go for the freight. I personally do not.
I'm out of Florida. I operate mainly in the midwest and east coast and everything in between. This is where I have found the best lanes and customers for what I do. I would love to be able to operate locally and be home more. I have not found the money I want here locally. So I head out OTR.
To make a move like this, your going to have to not think about this from a drivers perspective. Try to think outside of the box. Imagine yourself as a business entrepreneur and even though you will be driving,.. imagine that you are not. Now try to put together a solid business plan. Customers/Brokers (Your source of money) you need to know exactly how and where the money will be coming in. You need to understand your fixed expenses as well as what will be needed to cover unforeseen expenses and then how much you expect to pay yourself. Then once you have laid out the type of work you will be doing and you know the type of equipment you will need. That is when you start looking for a truck and trailer spec'd to do the job you need.
Make no mistake,.. this is an expensive and risky business to get into. Your location in my opinion will make it difficult unless you understand that you may have to head out OTR. If thats not an option,.. maybe find something else local to you that is easier,.. maybe take a pay cut in order to be with family. Or maybe find something else besides trucking?
Good luck.

Washington ain’t that bad with snow through the passes. Idaho & Montana is where those irons gets put to work majority of the time. I can deal with WA, OR, & ID winter storm.. But Montana, it takes FOREVER to get the hell out of there especially with the snow!!Last edited: Jan 13, 2018

See I always thought Montana does a first class job on their highways.
Wyoming does the worst.
Wyoming only place where them plow boys don't stray to far from town. Everyone else does the tops of the hills and passes, and salts & ashes them.
Wyoming, the highway near a town is spotless, 2 or 3 plows doing the same 5 miles, get out in the wilderness - fuhget about it. And that's on the interstates, let alone 2 laning it. -
Montana does get brutal at times. We also hit the northern border of Wyoming around Sheridan area and a little around Casper I-25. . Just glad I don’t have to deal with the 80(elk).. Wouldn’t want to deal with the wrath from the God of Wind!!
