Where did I go wrong here?

Asked 20k in trade for my truck, they said 15k and I agreed.
Offered 96% of asking price on their truck, they said no deal so I walked.

I wanted this to be a quick and easy deal, no preconditions. I had all my receipts ($50k total) and paperwork for an inframe done by previous owner. I was realistic about the value of my truck and theirs.

Financing was not an issue, I didn't even talk to them about it because it wasn't needed.

Why couldn't I close this deal, was it my truck? me? Was this dealership just not interested in selling? Honestly I'm at a loss.

I did negotiate. I accepted their counter offer for my trade value (20k asking, 15k accepted) and offered 96% of their asking price on the truck I wanted. They just flat out said no to that.

You negotiate the price first then throw in the truck.

Look it doesn't matter because there are plenty of trucks out there. Just keep looking.

Should have offered 80-85% and THEN walked when they balked.

When they call you back, they'll be countering at 85-90%

If they know you have cash or are dead serious, I'd be very surprised if they aren't calling you.

Dont get attached to particular truck untill your name is on it. Sure its annoying and you've wasted some time but that's live.

So you think that was why they wouldn't bite on my offer? I mean they could have had a truck sold at 96% of their asking and my truck wasn't a huge risk at 15k.

I do plan on doing it differently on the next one.

Dealerships only make 3-4k on a new truck purchase so your 96% off the MSRP basically ate all of that up. They could care less about your trade.

Thats what I'm trying to wrap my head around. The financing was never discussed, I didn't bring it up and the dealer didn't ask, if he had I would have told him that I have that part covered. I thought this was as simple deal as I could make it, my truck + cash for yours. Could have closed it in an afternoon.

It was a 10 year old pete 379, priced at 120k. I doubt they bought it for more than 90-95.
