Hi. 37, Male. First timer here. I’m looking to start CDL class in February (6 weeks) provided I pass the physical next week.
I’ve read a bit on here about various recommendations for rookies regarding OTR/regional/local etc and was curious if you experienced drivers know what companies and/or terminals are near New Bern NC.
We have the crap Coke/Pepsi stuff but I’m from Ohio and don’t really know this area. I’m hoping to avoid the 6 weeks gone stuff due to family/child. But open to regional or other “home on weekends” type work if that’s a good place to start.
Also, do regular college degrees help in the hiring process? I have a BSBA can Laude in international business administration.

You're in a pretty good location for some decent jobs. Some of those produce outfits in NC run teams to California and back, but there's other options also.
Here's a pretty decent job that pays really well and the longer you're there the pay goes up pretty fast. Probably $70K is the average. As a cdl school graduate, you do have less than one year experience. This company does hire new grads on a case by case basis. You'll be home either daily or a few times during the week.

That’s a good lead thanks. Greenville is only about an hour from my front door. I also saw there was a company called Averitt there.

Tanker outfit up the road on 70 in Kingston. They’re called tidewater transit. Ugly Volvo’s, but hey a terminal close to home is a plus.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Off topic but another question. Do you have to have an APU in the truck to run a CPAP machine?

Here's some more that hire new cdl grads, even if that's not on the website:

Cargo Transporters - Cargo also offers an extensive finishing program for recent trucking school graduates with Class A CDL. Solo drivers stay east & teams run to California and Pacific Northwest.

Hardy Bros. Inc.
Inman Trucking Co.bigkev1115 Thanks this. -
Good info. Tidewater hires new cdl grads. and has an excellent reputation.
Contact Tidewater and ask which schools they will hire from. That would be an excellent job for you with good paychecks and hometime. Some tanker companies are particular about which cdl school you graduate from.Last edited: Jan 18, 2018

Many companies without APU will allow you to idle the truck for CPAP power.
-
I think Averitt quit hiring new grads and now want 3 mos. experience. Call and ask to be sure.

Seems you could find a decent job with international companies affiliated with China or working at an American Embassy in China.
