I'm planning on getting my own authority in 2019 I would like to have one reefer and one dry van trailer to start I have trucks now but I'm leased on to a company and would really just like some good advice on does and donts my first year. I hear the first year is there hardest to make money because of not being a establish business. I also hear that using load boards long term is a bad idea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you for your time.

$.25/mile maintenance
No more than $1500 truck/trailer payment
5.5 mpg
$1000/month in the warchest for truck replacement and down payment for truck #2
Driver pay = 25% of load
Daily profitability target = $175
Misc expenses $500 per month
Tags $150/month
Insurance = $1300/month cargo and liability
I've been making $2000/month to the company with this off load boards per truck. Some months double that but average that on a yearly basis with truck breakdown, repairs, maint, vacation, etc
Startup cost:
39k for tractor
10500 for 11 year old trailer
20k float (brokers don't have your $ waiting for you at the drop off). I've waited up to 45 days for a couple of them to pay
Then I immediately spent 15k in repairs so make sure to have some $ for that.
So between the float and $ for repairs, have an extra $35kLast edited: Jan 18, 2018
