Its just an extension. Not an exemption. They already have the aobrd on their trucks. Those guys are all legal anyhow

Why do they need the extension if they already have AOBRD's? Doesn't make sense.

Dosn't really say in the article, but my guess..
They want to be able to put AOBR's in new trucks until the ELD issues are fixed. While if they replace a truck the AOBR can move to the new one, if they increase the size of the fleet the new trucks must be ELD.

I know that UPS is switching from truck permanently mounted ELD’s which they have used for years to portable ones. They are testing them with a limited number of drivers and have been having multiple problems with the software from their vendor. This possibly could be what Old Dominion is experiencing. I was told that UPS was making this change to be able to bring the ELD in to the weigh station. I don’t know if this is accurate or not.

My glider got an exemption, but my company still requires the ELD. Don't shoot the messenger. FYI

That struck me as being strange also. I thought that there was a 2 year time period(until Dec 2019) for carriers that have been "grandfathered" due to already having an AOBR prior to the compliance date. What a mess.

No member of any organization which pushed for a law or regulation should ever be allowed an exemption from it. Any exemptions ought to be reserved for those who fought against the change in the rules. If that were the case, perhaps these fools would be more careful about the rule changes they seek.
