Rpgaent-----You really need to look at numbers and put out a lil information.....cuz unless they have an extremely high line haul rate and/ or picking up a ton of your expenses....60/62% of linehaul....Is NOT goin to cover your operating costs
-
I think that I am explaining it wrong, and for that, I am an idiot.
The 62% number I am referring to is the percentage of the total settlement that I, as a truck owner, is taking. The driver is being paid 38% of the load settlement and 50% of detention, etc.
100% of fuel surcharge goes to truck which pays plate, ins (through company) and IFTA.
Hopefully this clarifies a bit. Maybe not.
-
No I understand it completely.....The truck gets 62% of line haul and y'all plan to split the 38% as if it's profit
What I'm trying to tell you is you NEED to take a much harder look at what that trucks ACTUALLY goin to cost you to operate
Cuz I'm still betting in today's economy with today's rates and real world costs
62% is NOT going to cover your operating costseasytopleez33 Thanks this. -
An owner-operator that runs his own truck won't run for 62% of the load if leased on.
That number doesn't allow enough for an owner-operator to put a driver into the truck it only allows enough for the owner-operator to run for a while until he's going to go broke.
But he'll go broke a lot faster if he put somebody in the truck at 62%.
Check your numbers. And whatever amount of money that you're getting ready to lay out to do this turn right around and go invest it in something that you can make money at instead of going Broke. I think Trucking holds the record for most people with ideas such as yours that have gone broke when they had a free choice to make a better investment.
If you had a different number to throw at us maybe there would be something different to say.
Your scenario is the same as a husband and wife that together they make $100,000, but the wife cost them $200,000 a year.
How long will that last? How do you think that will end up? Of course it will end up in ruin and destruction.
Simple math. -
That is what I am trying to nail down, because there is no way to make up a loss in volume. Maybe I have not got all of my ducks in a row. If you had to list the operating costs of a single tractor (no trailer), what would they be? I want to be sure my spreadsheet has them all listed and broken out.

Also intelligent people when they invest money look at the risk factor.
Real estate, stocks, established businesses, each of them has a risk factor that you must take on to make money.
Whatever that risk factor is for those other Investments multiply the risk by 10,000 and that's the risk in the trucking business.
You have much much much more to possibly lose then possibly gain.
If you really really really really need to do something with all that money flowing out of your pockets, you might do better just to take whatever you would use to buy the truck and just put it on to the craps table and make one roll of the dice.
You will have much better odds of making money that way then you will in the trucking business.
And the house always has the advantage... -
Just to clarify also, I will have no truck payment. Granted that money is sunk cost and I want to make it back obviously.
-
WOW...so the overwhelming opinion from the group is to RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN.
So, the question is this; If trucking is such a horrible business, why do ya'll do it?
Is there no way for ANY arrangement to work with an owner and driver setup? It seems that there is not. -
Not knowing anything about you or your partner you already are in a hole because you're willing to work for 62%.
When that's your starting point there is no help anyone can give you.
It's like watching a wreck unfold right before your eyes. Success is not possible at that rate.
The guy that's supposed to be your partner with the experience that's not putting up any of his own money and just reaping the benefits should have told you that.
It isn't apparent to me that you are the only one that doesn't know what's going on and that's an even worse combination.
I hope you don't take what I'm saying to you personally. It's just that plenty of people have gone broke in this business that knew everything about it and when I see two people that are trying to begin something that together they can't even figure out what the rate to the truck should be I'm very sorry to you sir but that is a colossal colossal failure waiting to happen.
If I were you I would be TERRIFIED that your knowledgeable experienced business partner apparently knows nothing about this and you unfortunately know less.
But apparently he's very willing to let you sign your name and your credit and your money to do this.
Red flags everywhere buddy.
