Ok, I think what our OP is trying to say is he's giving the driver 38% of gross and he's keeping 62 for himself.
Hey, I have 17 years and a spotless record. Can I work for 38% of gross???? That's a high percentage for a driver. Even with 20 years experience.
62% isn't enough on your end. Especially if your putting up all the risk to get this going.
I won't address the going into business with friends part. It occasionally does work.rpgaent Thanks this. -
Well then I suggest you listen to any and all advice not what you only wanna hear. You could be a successful newby in your business just listen to especially the vets and ask plenty of questions.
-
Which means to me you will not be making money.
You are going to get a slice of the billable
So you are going to split the settlement which is say 80% of the billable and end up with 62%.
I start my drivers at 40%, nothing less.
Have you ever bought a truck?
If you buy new, then you have a $120k investment.
If you buy used, and it is less than $60k, the risk of breakdown rises exponentially.
I doubt your driver will know what the hell he is doing when it comes to buying a truck.
So this is about risk management and nothing more.
No you don't cut up accessorial fees.
Detent goes to the driver. Hook up and take down fees goes to the driver.
There are a few exceptions but that is something that you have to figure out.
You are being schooled.
This isn't like a retail or simple business, a lot of it has to do with dealing with regulations and the fact it is a regulated industry on the state and federal level.
I've seen a lot of cheap owners, I've seen a lot of people get into this to make a fast buck and bail and I've seen this same scheme before by people who thought they would make big bucks.
Now what do you expect to have in a return in a year or two years?
Say you got a $59k truck, you will need operating capital of at least three months out and need breakdown funding say a minimal of $20k. So if your leased to a carrier, you will have to keep paying the bills with them.
If that truck does take a crap, then what?
Then your expecting to drive when the driver isn't around? Well that may not happen. You have to be accepted by the carrier as a driver and go through the same intake process and may have to drive but many times a carrier's insurance won't allow a new driver to be part of the fleet.IluvCATS Thanks this. -

I agree 100% and am taking EVERYTHING in that you guys say! (even the ALL CAPS SHOUTING at me
I do understand that 38% is a high number and plan to discuss with my driver the justification of this. Let me post some real numbers for an average weeks settlement on this line and see what ya'll think.
- Base - $3651.84 (38% of this to driver)
- Detention - $37.12 (50/50 split)
- Fuel Surcharge - $1031.70 (100% to truck)
- Driver - $1406.26
- Truck - $3314.67
Those are the numbers that he averages. He has had weeks where he has (document-able) made $7000.00.
Anyway, that is the raw data.
