Mr James R. Hoffa About 40 years ago 8 cents a mile I didn't do it for the truck owner. I did it so my family could eat and have a roof over there head.
Yes there was better paying jobs but with very little experience you do what you have to. ( Just like today)Young and stupid but when your hungry and no where to live you will do a lot of stupid thing.
Life for us has never been a bed of rose's for me and the wife but we raised 3 wonderful children . One owns his own trucking co. and the other is a collage professor at the university of Arkansas . And my daughter has one of the most important jobs in the world (Mother) We have 10 grand kids and 0ne great grand son and one Gr Gr. grandson
been married to my Lovely Lady for 48 years.
Yes maybe young but stupid I dough it.
Happy Holidays From our house to yours . Mr.James R. Hoffa
PS old timers like us what kept the world turning back then . And yes I have earned the right to pat myself on the back JOB WELL DONE

With a name like Hoffa you don't have to look to far for outlaw's huh.
-
What's wrong with "Hoffa"? It's a good German name.
The problem isn't the guy that stops when he is out of hours, it's the 25 other guys that run when they are out of hours. -
He sure wasn't no Robbin Hood.
-
He managed to build an organization that improved the working conditions and the pay of truck drivers.
I wouldn't even think of getting in a non union truck. I started driving in the late 70's and been union since 86. Never had to run over hours, and never had to sleep in a truck. -
Not everyone wants to be union, and some of us prefer OTR to looking at the same route every day. That's no reason to insult the rest of us by insinuating that we're all pill poppers.
So you started driving truck before you were 21? Did you run intrastate then? -
Yes my Brother was a Teamster for 28 years He had a heart attack and died in his truck at age 52 and your Union told his wife to go to hell (Not in them words ) they didn't owe her anything. A man puts in 30 years in and dies . His wife and chilern are out in the cold.
Many teamster driver couldn't hold a job if not for the teamsters. There fat and Lazy. Not all but a hell of lot of them.
I have never ever had to kiss nobody's back side to keep a job.
That is all I gonna say on this subject good day.benthere Thanks this. -
Lordy, the Ironworker's union isn't even that heartless. My great uncle was semi-retired and did some periodic work still. He died on a job site. Union reps even showed up at his funeral along with quite a few of the guys he had worked with over the years.
