Guess you missed that LOL.
The third party auditor hired by the OP's company is saying they need to go to line 4 and do a POST trip INSPECTION at the end of the shift. They are also saying this is required by 396.11 (which I say is false). This POST trip inspection would be in addition to the PRE trip inspection they are required to do at the BEGINNING of the shift. Grade one math tells us that 1 pre trip inspection + 1 post trip inspection = 2 inspsections.

But was there mention of "minimum time" required or wanted for both/either? Paper or eLog, "flagging" is an easy option and does not cost you valuable log time.
I'm at a company that wants time shown both pre and post, however they don't impose any real minimum time requirements and I've been known to keep time "very minimal" trying to run cross country with only a few projected minutes to spare. -
I'm actually super stoked now. I can combat his 396.11 argument with 396.11 section 5. We are a driveaway-towaway operation and therefor are exempt from his mumbo jumbo. I no longer have to enforce the "new rule" and I feel awesome about that.
-
And yes, for all of those that would like to say that if I had mentioned that in the first place (being a driveaway-towaway operation) then this may have been simpler, you're 100% right. I did not know the terminology for that until this morning. One of the drivers said it to me and I remembered reading about the driveaway-towaway being exempt, I just did not know that was what our company was considered. I appreciate all of the feedback that I got here. It has helped to educate me a lot and prompted me to do even more research.
-
When I replied yesterday doubting they're doing a post trip, I was assuming it was a typical over the road operation. The guys/gals out here sleeping in truck stops every night aren't doing post trips, not that I've ever seen anyway.

That auditor is a keeper huh? (Rhetorical question)deathB4decaf Thanks this.

Auditors are very important people. If you don't believe me just ask one.
We have an auditor that does our quarterly reports. He's very diligent (read nit-picky) and he really does save us some money once in awhile. He has a major talent for pointing out our fiscal shortcomings and archaic book-keeping methods in a whiny, holier-than-thou way that grates on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard.
The ladies in the office hate him.
But we need his services.
Now, if only I could stand to be in the same room with him for more than ten minutes without wanting to strangle him.... -
1. Driveway or not, the post trip inspection isn’t law
2. I recall you said your drivers sometimes have 2-3 day trips......seems like in this case the trucks aren’t going into the shop at the end of the day. What then?4mer trucker Thanks this. -
They're doing post trips on the road, just not when they're arriving back. That's why it was such an issue. The gentleman that does the 2-3 day trips is one of the mechanics also.
-
LOL, I know that quite a few people here may feel similar. He gets information wrong sometimes, that's really the only thing that bothers me. If I were to give him our logs and feel confident that he was correct every time, then this would not be such an issue. I guess he has butted heads with a couple of our drivers.
