I can't stand to drive barefoot... I tend to "over-feel" the road that way... I drive in a pair of my wife's old skater style sneakers that I can slip on and off quickly... And I carry a pair of heavy duty steel toed boots infront of the passenger seat for poor weather and around the docks or other area that they should be worn.

Ever step on a sharp rock? Or a thorn? Barefoot, your instant reaction is to draw the foot back up. If that happened during a panic brake, well, it could end bad for you.

I wear boots all the time unless I'm sleeping.

OLDSKOOLERnWV and MACK E-6 Thank this.

People can ride a unicycle elevated 4 stories off the ground while balancing #### on their heads and juggling. You do anything enough and you can make it work.

So if you are used to driving barefoot then switching to boots is going to be ackward for a little while and less safe. Your muscle memory won’t account for the boots being a little extra wide and might catch the edge of a petal you didn’t want to push. Reverse is true too... if you are used to boots, the petal will feel strange, toes won’t grip the petal like your boot does and the petal will feel further away. Taking your boots off will be less safe while you adapt.

I only know because I’ve done both for long periods of time and then switched... I remember how different it felt both ways.

I do it for the same reason most people take off their shoes at home, it's just more comfortable. During the winter I wear big fuzzy slippers to keep my feet warm.

Passed a Fed Ex doubles on I-70 in Ohio Tuesday, just a sock on with his left hoof UP on the dash. Only takes 2 seconds to loose all control, no matter how good a driver they think they are.
