North America: Run a cool old truck for 57 years. Make periodic updates/upgrades as components wear out over their normal lifespan.
Europe: Replace a new truck every 4-5 years with another hunk of plastic, robbing our precious Earth of natural resources and polluting our air while mass producing all those components.spyder7723, Cat sdp, Oxbow and 1 other person Thank this. -
No, that's not true I'm afraid. However well you can handle your truck, it still takes energy and concentration. The less attention you need to pay to for instance changing gears, the more attention you can have for the road. Maybe you think it's going without thinking to much, but that is not the case.

Shifting gears keeps your mind focused on driving. You have to think ahead and predict. With an auto, you put it in drive and turn your brain off. Who cares about what happens ahead, just step on the brake to slow down and let the truck do everything. Automation and nanny systems just dumbs down drivers. Why use the thing between the ears when the truck does everything for you. Just hold the wheel.spyder7723, Gearjammin' Penguin and Oxbow Thank this.

If you have an manual, you have something to do now and then. Otherwise it can be boring behind the wheel.
But as well as having an old Peterbilt or similar, you can have an old Scania. They are of the same size and there are no plastic.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
The cab on an old style American truck looks very small and cramped. But maybe it is cosy.........?
The analog gauges in an old style American truck looks right anyway.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Witn that 61 narrow nose, you don't have to lean over to roll down the passenger side window, but it looks like his sleeper has plenty of room!
Cat sdp Thanks this. -
Exactly right!

if you live here and drive manual you have to do lot of things, here it is not too big problem, but in west of europe if you are not lucky(public holiday next day, vacation time in combination with bad weather) you can waste 3-4 hours per day being in traffic jamOxbow Thanks this.
