When I saw Bay Bridge I immediately thought route 50. When I was a kid, my mom's car got a flat when we were coming back from OC and we weren't allowed to stop. Being scared of heights it made a lasting impression on me. Now, in a big truck I'm even higher up and it still freaks me out! It's such a great feeling make it across in one piece.

That US 50 bridge set was built roughly around 1955, and soars about 230ish feet roughly give or take a little bit to clear the large ships below. It's at least a 200 foot clear.
If you really want some fun, come through Sandstone mountain and use the New River Gorge Crossing in West Virginia. I think that one is the highest in the free world. Something close to 900 feet.
The ocean crossing between Norfolk and Tidewater is a personal favorite of mine, provided I am loaded and seeking a blue beacon to get that salt off if I have to. That rig will rust like no body's business. It does get a little bit lonely crossing that open water main when there is a storm in the offing and shes rolling almost as high as the bridge deck.
Mack, that Choptank, thats the new bridge poured sometime in the last 20 years right? Up and over big time.MACK E-6 Thanks this. -
Right. That one went up in the late 80’s as part of then-Gov. William Donald Schaefer’s “reach the beach” campaign to bring some business to Ocean City. The old swing span Emerson Harrington Bridge still remains as a fishing pier with the swing span removed.
Further down in Vienna, that bridge was demolished and a new one built alongside around the same time.
Before this was done, backups both going into Cambridge and back at the Kent Narrows drawbridge which still exists were legendary.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Yes the old Kent Narrows. The whole trip was either good or a bust depending on that little bridge.

I don't like bridges, took the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel a few times, never liked it.
When I lived on Prince Edward Island, I had to cross the Confederation Bridge every time I left the island.

Had to wait there several times because of high winds.
In Europe I crossed the tallest bridge ever, the Millau Viaduct in France, 1125 ft high.

Went through there one night , waves were breaking on the bridge. Heard later that they closed it after me, I was the last vehicle across. Spent the night at the rest area as you come off the bridge . Was happy to get there!x1Heavy Thanks this.

The Bridge Tunnel opened April 15, 1964 I was driving for Carolina Trailways at the time out of Norfolk. Before we crossed the bay on ferries, about 1 and a half hr trip I can never understand why anyone would even think about passing, only 17 miles, impatience is a killer.
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
We used to have overnight passenger Ferry from Norfolk to Baltimore. Not certain how long that steam ship service lasted but one of my relatives and her family relation came that way to the city to make a future.
Here in Arkansas people pass at 90 to 100 in the rush hour or any time. And they wonder how in the world you are still in their view down the road. -
Wasn't just a couple years ago a truck went thru
The contstruction barriers out there and ended up
Floating in the water.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Yes I believe there was a Navy helo on a training flight that retrieved the survivor who died later.
Truckers don't get open ocean survival training of any kind. Once yer in the drink that's pretty much that if the water temp is cold enough within 30 minutes at most. If God fell into that cold water, he's dead too.
