    Broke down 69: lol!!!

My boss is very understandable. Easy to work with.

I work with him to help improve his company when things get expensive like cost of fuel.

I’m not a licensed mechanic but I can rebuild engines. Boss let me rebuild one for him...

I just finished rebuilding a 3406B Cat for his 1987 Pete 377 a few weeks ago..

    DDD73942-BABA-4F96-8BC1-0CA926BE546D.jpeg

Instead of $32,000 for Cat to overhaul it, boss only paid $15,000 so far for engine parts, head work, and rebuilt injection pump.

And I cleaned and painted this engine.

Thats awsome. Of course I'm sure an engine builder knows that building high horsepower/torque isn't possible without dumping more diesel on the pistons. You've got a bull moose of an engine and a mountain pulling gear. Mileage and horsepower/ torque is a binary choice, you can have one or the other, especially with that drag racing rear gear.

    Oh I hear you.

I was with one company that did that with fuel mileage sweating it. It literally had a HUGE gauge with like a School Ruler painted red coming around the dial every time you got on her with a shrill alarm to boot in your ear. I lasted two hours. I quit. Yes it was under a load, abandonment etc. I call it justified. I did make a game of it for about a hour.... I couldnt drive it safely what with that stupid gauge.

To the one poster saying "PET IT" that's perfect. 6 mpg would be a challenge when counted in US Gallons. I have to refrain myself from teasing our Dear Canadians on their somewhat larger gallons....

Pyrometer is or was one of the most best way to know how the engine is doing in terms of work. If it is burning up you are whipping it too hard. Finding the next gear or two down and easing up to where you can hold a rpm somewhat less than what you were holding burning that thing up.

That truck should be hoarded carefully by the owner. To be allowed to run out and be played with as a reward of sorts to a GOOD driver. Not some jerk with a flat foot angry at the poor working conditions or something.

I cannot imagine the losses possible at 3 something or less miles per gallon. Or gallons per mile. I hope it's worth it all.

Back home long ago we had a newer fire engine pumper with a cannon on it (Huge amounts of water) and a righteous pump set to feed it. The engine I was told on that one was well over 650 and something on the order of 2250 torque or higher. Just listening to it at set idle running that PTO is something all truckers should do at least once in a life time.

The old timer got the idea of keeping a CAT revved up from driving 1693's, A's and B's. The C would stand a lower RPM than a B but still nothing like an ACERT.
Old habits die hard that's why an old slow B model is still my money maker

X1heavy: I would not be working with a company that has a fuel meter that buzzes if it goes red.

I drove a sterling with 330 hp m11 for 4 years and loved that truck.

I took care of it. Changed the oil when it needed to be changed, kept it clean.

That truck starts in cold winter without being plugged in, ready to go in 15-20 mins of warm up.

I loved it. I learned patience and allowed the little engine to do what it can to pull 100,000 lbs on a b-train even up a grade of 8%.

Now I got this beast... it has to be petted and be gentle.....

Wore out: that’s pretty much what I see with the b model cats.

We have 3 B model cat engines in our fleet. 1990 International dump truck we just bought in the fall, 1992 Pete that’s our full time float truck, then the 1987 Pete which I just overhauled, that’s gonna be my boss’s truck to drive this years.

The engines have to be revved up to get them to work.

I love the two turbos on the acert. The smaller one gets boost quickly at low rpms.

Is the engine in our 1998 ford a 3406C? It’s a electronic Cat. 500 hp.

Wore out: ok, I’ll have to check out the C model. I only know of the B, the one E and the ACERT.

The C is just like the B on the outside. Just internal differences in injecion pump and crank shaft is the short of it
