I am interested in going to a CDL program and then drive a flatbed. I have a fantasy that I will like it, but what I need is a reality check from you flatbedders. What are the pros and cons of hauling flatbed. I realize it is more physical and tarping in Winter will be a bear, but what are the other cons. Reality may set in and I won't like it at all, or....the opposite. I am 56 yo and in decent shape, although once in a while I do experience some lower back pain. Thanks for any replies.

CONS: Tarping. Tarping. Frozen tarps, wet, muddy tarps. Tarping in 40mph winds.

    PRO: You got a job.

56yo? Already got back pain? If you want to try open deck, think step

Pros: NO GROCERY WAREHOUSES! No lumpers, most customers work banker hours

Cons: Thinking man's job. Stupidity and laziness equals sudden death. Tarping is NOT difficult IF you have a brain.

"But Six, what about the weather?"

Well, to the sidewalk sissy types who have never had a physical job in their entire life, and who break a sweat when trying to wipe their arses, yes the weather can ruin their day.

"But Six, what about my back and my age?"

Work smart and work at your own pace. You will be fine.

    Luck in battle.

Many shippers have you load inside and you also tarp inside. FB is a different beast than van. Other drivers will help you roll tarps/untarp etc. Your finished product, (a secured load) will make you feel like an artist ! It's not for everyone. Do not ever tarp a load by yourself if you have to climb on top of the load like a lumber load after the place has closed. Which happens sometimes if you're the last load of the day around 430 pm. Because if you fall off the load, nobody will find you until the next morning.

Cooler more interesting work. I get to play spider man and climb and crawl and roll in 4 seasons and some serious risk to keep it real. More respect IMO because you have a lot to deal with already and most people get it. Zero guessing on whether or not my load is doing this or that. Pride.

    Zero cons.

Think step? As in literally a step?

Stepdeck. Very little tarping and you can haul different loads.

You get the feeling I don't like tarping.

I have a brain. And I was anal about ensuring my tarp looked as good as I could make it. just hate tarping at my age.

However your post is dead on.

I don't see too much of that indoor loading/tarp.
