Lol that's funny. Do you have any idea what the freight rates would have to look like for this to be feasible? Trucks would have to average 15mpg!
Pay?

I drove for 25% revenue, truck made about 2000 plus each week into the NE of all places, particularly with Butter into Hunts Point or eggs to Albany and Salt back to Maryland or Icecream back to maryland frozen -20. Sometimes 30 stops during a week all over the NE. Other times fish loads from cape cod (One flounder, bigger than a man it seems for the whole tractor trailer. Thump... Going to Boston Fish market. I don't know what that kind of fish cost, but if you got blue fin tuna it's approaching 10,000 for just one fish retail on the dock once you caught it over a certain weight.) There is even export to Japan of all places which by word of mouth explained to me is a Emperor of all auctions related to fish. Big big money involved. Whorleys in Pittsburgh comes to mind.
That 25% of revenue paycheck some weeks are really really good. This was back in the 80's for me. Literally the one time I ran paid as revenue. If FFE was paid say 2.60 a mile from LA to Avenel NJ (2600 book miles... our pay should be around 1690 gross for one way, double that back to LA 6 days round trip two loads maybe 1.90 for the second one I don't know. Those kinds of rates are a state secret. FFE made their money. We are never to know exactly how much.
This was in 2001. I was paid high 40's once the salary was finished and spouse was paid .32 once her training wage of .28 was finished. I warned her that her pay will be very very very poor during the several months training. We would be living on our salary and her VA income. So that is how we managed to get by as a team. Consider about .60 something to the truck for both of us over 2600 miles to Avenel. That's about 3000 gross round trip each week to the same bank account more or less.
Percentage or salary is what you want. It's not crap. Not at all.MidwestResident Thanks this. -
That is part of the problem on my end.
I literally do not know the paid rates FFE got on those loads. Since FFE does not exist anymore there is no point.
Generally it is my understanding that revenue a company makes on a given load from A to B anywhere in North America is a state secret not told to drivers. Even if you were in a position to know the actual revenue made for a run, there is generally a NDA signed or some such contracted to preserve the .. information from becoming widely known to your competition.
That is all I have really. Without knowing the actual rates of anything with the one tiny exception when I bought that tractor in 1994 with the expecting to run 1.50 to 1.65 at most seeing maybe 1.20 go away to the truck payments, fuel etc etc etc etc etc what would be left is in my pocket subject to taxes. Big time taxes.
That was my one and only taste for that level of knowledge related to overall revenues from which payroll must come along with fuel, insurance, permits, OSD, shop and office people etc Utilities etc etc etc.
When i worked for a major flatbed carrier in Indiana, I wandered into a unlocked room one night upstairs with night dispatcher. That room contained a printer detailing loads dispatch paid by what amount per mile on every load for that day in near real time. I managed to identify my unit at a average of 2.45 a mile give or take 50 cents before the night dispatcher tossed me out of there and slammed the door locked then proceeded to scream that drivers DO NOT get into THAT room. Ever.
Well I had a eyeful. And I started the thinking then. This was a long time ago. One lease driver was near the top of the large spreadsheet printout. He was in debt 50,000 dollars and slowly deducting it with his revenue hauls. munch munch munch. Once the 50K is paid off to the company and debt free, this driver will be free to do what he wants with his tractor.
