All I know is what Forward Air told me when I was looking for a carrier to lease on with, and I was not in the least bit interested. They were giving me that $1.25 number or there about with the old fuel surcharge. This was around 2014, so things may have changed there, but I highly doubt that. I see their owner operator trucks, nothing to write home about, old trucks that look like they would fail a DOT. The kind I see dragging the containers between Detroit and Chicago. That says it all in my book.

You forgot to add it also requires a major amount of DISCIPLINE for it to work.

I used to be a temp helper on garbage trucks, making temp helper pay ($6.50/hr) and the drivers I worked with spoke of making $1,200/wk... $50k annually seemed to be the average claim, and those guys got paid by the ton. Long hours, but home every night. Even making peanuts I enjoyed the job, there was no pretense. Just work hard, sweat hard, and goof off on the CB radio.

That was thirteen years ago! In Fort Wayne Indiana where a nice 3 bedroom house goes for $200k even now.

Garbage hauling is definitely the best kept secret in trucking, in the right situation. I recall the company ordered in fried chicken and macaroni one day to butter up the drivers during contract negotiations.

Yeah, important people quickly get cranky when their garbage doesn't get picked up. And its tough to bring in dozens of guys with CDLs and clean piss last minute. That dynamic makes for pretty decent contracts - no wonder O.C. played such a role...

    Financial.
A lot of money can come thru an owner operaters account but its not all yours to spend at will.
There needs to be money in there when all the bills are due plus a maintenance account.
It takes great discipline when your buddy shows up and wants to sell you that mustang you always wanted for 20,000.00 when you know you have 50,000.00 in your trucking account but you bills are due next week.

Yeah, I’m frugal to the absurd so no problem there, organized with expense records too. I just have an aversion to reams of forms and documents.

I don’t know that full authority is something I’d ever be into, but leasing onto a carrier seems like a happy medium. Especially with the timeline in this business I have in mind. Pouring the majority of my personal income into rental real estate is the plan.

Rentals are pretty similar to trucking as far as cash flow. Steady income for a long time can lull you into complacency and then BAM! you get a $10,000 sewer repair two weeks after replacing a $15,000 roof.

Of course, like trucking, the more you do yourself and the less restrictive your local regulations, the cheaper those big hits are...
