Hello all, new here. My husband and I are considering changing his company. He's been on the road for 6 months driving a 2017 Kenworth T680 with an APU.
Here's my question-
I know jack #### about Opti-idle, but one of the companies we're looking into (Shaffer), only has Opti-idle trucks. How does that work? I only have experience with an APU. (We're also considering Melton)
My biggest concern is: We have dogs! If we walked inside the gas station, or take a shower, it was easy to keep the APU running to keep the truck at a reasonable temperature. With an opti-idle, is that the same concept? Is it reliable? How does it work? What's the difference?
Sorry for the newbie question.
Thanks.

In this day of modern technology, I wouldn't work for a company that has opti-idle, even for more pay.
With opti-idle the truck engine starts and stops automatically when the temperature reaches a high or low temperature. This means, every time the truck engine cuts off or starts, you and your husband and dog wake up.
I shouldn't say I won't work for a company with opti-idle, because that's a broad statement, but I would at least put them on the bottom of the list, but just above companies that don't have opti-idle or APU.Last edited: Mar 15, 2018

Apus have their own engine and can faulter out. Opti Idle can stop working too though. Like Chinatown said I would rather have the apu unit. Just set the temp and you are good to go. If you get the sequence wrong for the opti idle it wont set and could drain your batteries, among other things.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Ugh so opti idle is as crappy as I thought. I don’t understand why such a large company like Shaffer is using something like opti idle. Is it cheaper?
@crappiejunkie In this 6 months, how did you like them? Were the miles good? Why did you leave?KB3MMX Thanks this. -
Did you find out anything about Heyl?

I left there cause I wanted a dedicated route. I was promised one at Shaffer, and at the last minute they backed out and refused to let me be on it. The company I left for gave me a dedicated route that was closer to the house that let me get by the house a few days of the week.Need4Speed and KB3MMX Thank this. -
