Hello all, new here. My husband and I are considering changing his company. He's been on the road for 6 months driving a 2017 Kenworth T680 with an APU.

    Here's my question-
I know jack #### about Opti-idle, but one of the companies we're looking into (Shaffer), only has Opti-idle trucks. How does that work? I only have experience with an APU. (We're also considering Melton)

My biggest concern is: We have dogs! If we walked inside the gas station, or take a shower, it was easy to keep the APU running to keep the truck at a reasonable temperature. With an opti-idle, is that the same concept? Is it reliable? How does it work? What's the difference?

    Sorry for the newbie question.
    Thanks.

In this day of modern technology, I wouldn't work for a company that has opti-idle, even for more pay.
With opti-idle the truck engine starts and stops automatically when the temperature reaches a high or low temperature. This means, every time the truck engine cuts off or starts, you and your husband and dog wake up.
I shouldn't say I won't work for a company with opti-idle, because that's a broad statement, but I would at least put them on the bottom of the list, but just above companies that don't have opti-idle or APU.

I drove for Shaffer for 6 months. With the opti idle it is tricky to set. The gear shifter has to be in netural and the splitter flipped up and if someone or something (like dogs) were to bump it it could turn the opti idle off. It has its advantages as it runs off the trucks engine and such.

Apus have their own engine and can faulter out. Opti Idle can stop working too though. Like Chinatown said I would rather have the apu unit. Just set the temp and you are good to go. If you get the sequence wrong for the opti idle it wont set and could drain your batteries, among other things.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Ugh so opti idle is as crappy as I thought. I don’t understand why such a large company like Shaffer is using something like opti idle. Is it cheaper?

@crappiejunkie In this 6 months, how did you like them? Were the miles good? Why did you leave?

Shaffer was a decent company. This has been a few years back. The miles weren't good at first cause they put me in a crappy truck that kept breaking down. Once I got a new truck the miles picked up cause I wasn't sitting in the shop all the time. They kept me in the Northeast a lot. I live in southern Ohio. Only time I got south of Pennsylvania at times, was to go home on home time. Some of their shippers are a pain to get to, but of the reefer companies that I am familoar with, they are probably one of the better ones.

I left there cause I wanted a dedicated route. I was promised one at Shaffer, and at the last minute they backed out and refused to let me be on it. The company I left for gave me a dedicated route that was closer to the house that let me get by the house a few days of the week.

I haven’t gotten around to calling them yet. Couldn’t find a whole lot of info in the website. Shaffer is offering us .50 CPM practical miles with free rider policy and pets. Sounded pretty good for reefer. Heyl is reefer too, right?

Thank you for the review! I’m most concerned about making money at this point in our lives, but I know that since he’s a rookie, it’s harder to make money since a lot of companies want 2 years experience. Our choices are a lot slimmer, but I haven’t heard AWFUL things about Shaffer....yet. Still doing research on OTR companies to see what our options are. Which means real, and honest reviews of a company = invaluable. We all know recruiters will sell you the world lol.

Honestly, as a newbie, he isnt going to find better money than what Shaffer is offering, at least what I have found. They are one of the better reefer companies, like I said. Is he pulling reefers right now?

Btw, they do have a free rider policy. Minus training my wife rode with me from day 1.

Yes! He is pulling reefers with Stevens Transport, his training company. But as you know, it’s not a company you stay with. He basically gets an average of .38 CPM and they give him table scraps for miles. We made the mistake of signing up for their lease, it pays no different than company, and we take a lot more risk. We will gladly pay the $750 lease fee to quit it early. I don’t think either of us will ever want to lease anywhere ever again after this nightmare. Shaffer is looking good, our other top pick so far is Melton.
