1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

It goes both ways. OTR want OTR experience, local wants local experience. We ran tandem dumps and dump trailers at my company in Ga and they HATED hiring OTR drivers. We'd get guys with 15 yrs. OTR and my boss would have the trainer ride with them 1-2 weeks. This wasn't just dump training, he wanted them re-trained on how to drive a truck lol. The boss taught me how to drive and got me my CDL so I did training for about a year. I just loved riding with 60 yr. old men who have been driving longer than I've been alive (I'm 24) and telling them how they needed to drive our trucks. Talk about awkward.

LOL! This is true for another reason as well. A local company hires an OTR driver, partucularly one with lots of experience. The OTR driver discovers two things after just a month or so. First, he finds he is not making NEARLY as much money as he was OTR. Then he realizes he misses OTR... yep, it happens all the time! There is just something about those days where the only thing I have to do is get in the truck and drive all day, instead of 10-15 or more drops, picks, running around local all day, etc. for $12ph!
Been there. Done that. Wore out the T-shirt.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Here's wishing y'all a safe, happy, prosperous 2009

Well, if it has 2B OTR 4ME, then I'll just choose one of the "good" newbie-hiring companies. *L*O*L

    A couple of questions...

RE: OTR making more $$$ than local drivers, seems odd that whenever I was picking up backhauls from this or that refrigerated warehouse, all the OTR guys I spoke with shared this complaint: "I can't get enough miiiles. I'm not making enough moooneeey." Then sometimes they'd ask me if my company was hiring. *LOL* And not just solo drivers, teams too

As for those who say local drivers hate OTR, well, if so many OTR drivers are in love with OTR... last time I looked, the driver turnover rate for the major regulated freight carriers stood at around 120%

And try this for me sometime, call any of those companies' recruiters. They'll tell you, "Our only job openings are in our national fleet, 48 states & Canuckistan!" Regional driver jobs: zero. Local jobs: zilch. Dedicated: el zippo.

So, as the wise man once said, "Somethin' here don't add up..."

    XOXO,

    BRG

Looks like you hit the hammer on the head. I know where I live, if your a local driver and makeing less then $18.00 hr, then there is something wrong with ya. also, I know sorry to say, but gainey takes local exp guys, they credit them with 1 yr for every 2 they drove local. nice to see when good quetions come up, shows that we are not anti social, and uneducated, to stupid to do anything else people.
