I know I’m not the only one whose tired of being a high paid lumper. Id rather do an 18 stop liftgate run with no liftgate. Not the physical work that’s a problem just being in these places for 4-6 hours.
Anyone else tired of the sort n seg runs?

And don’t forget the abundance of phone calls from dispatch.. “are you done yet? How much longer?”

(Or a low-paid lumper service)
I bet those loads that take you several hours to break down would cost several hundred dollars if the lumper service did it, and depending how busy they were it might not get done any sooner.
I had a couple reefer jobs where I'd lump my own freight rather than pay the lumper service if the breakdown was reasonable. Obviously, I wasn't an hourly worker at the time so the question was "do I want to get paid while I'm here, or do I want to take a nap?" Also, "how much work is involved compared with how much money I'll make?" My last job paid drivers according to the entire weight of the load regardless of how many cases were touched, so sometimes it was stupid to do it myself but usually it was a no-brainer.
I can say I rarely lumped my own freight for much less than $50 per hour and occasionally would get to brag to my wife how I made "lawyer money" to move a few boxes around.
But I agree with you - sort/seg loads at grocery or foodservice warehouses suck as a P&D driver because it's too much like work, and it's boring. I feel sorry for those kids working their butts off breaking their backs while their employers rake in insane money for "unloading services." Ultimately, the cost is passed to the consumer, so we all pay to pad their pockets in the prices we pay for food.Last edited: Mar 22, 2018

Even better when you have 15 more stops behind that.

I’m glad I run too far away to be slapped with one of those.

I walk into every grocery warehouse with a big grin on my face. Why? Because I'm paid top dollar for each and every minute I'm there. Waiting at the guardshack? PAID. Waiting at the check-in window? PAID. Waiting for a door? PAID. Sort and seg? No problemo, it's a paid workout. Union men go on lunch? Fine by me, I'll head out to my truck and get paid to sit on my ###.
I did the long-haul refigerated LTL loads long ago. All the unpaid waiting, freebies, getting jerked around and ripped off by produce houses and lumpers. Never again. Whatever they're paying these days for that kinda BS, it ain't enough. I see these guys all the time at warehouses staring down the lumpers with daggers in their eyes. Then they gotta park on some deserted get off ramp because they burned up their 14 and the ELD won't let them drive.Bob Dobalina, Trucker61016, LoneCowboy and 1 other person Thank this. -
I know at wakefern, it’s a toss up time wise. You may get out quicker by unloading yourself, maybe not. Half the time it’s the checkers who screw you over. Safeway in Upper Marlboro is the same, they give you a 2am appt & the checkers don’t even clock in till 5am.
