In another thread (Daytime work, etc) he explained how he flaked out due to fear and got a flatbed gig that suits him. It read to me like 2 guys talking themselves out of great jobs. I don't get it. (No offense, @bentstrider83 and @TheyCallMeDave !)

Like I mentioned earlier, I tend to not jump anywhere unless the boat is on fire and taking on water.

Hours seem to be just as long as anywhere else, but the pay is at least fair and decent to some limited degree. I'm just not a big fan of burning up the 14+ each night.
Most drivers seem to think less of those that don't want to work that hard. While some of us are actually wanting to throttle back due to the effect that's being seen on our bodies come 1-2 yr medical card renewal time.

There are two issues with overwork. One is health, which can decline with long hours sitting and crap hours upsetting sleep patterns.

The other is involvement, work becomes the only thing in life, one reason why old railroaders used to die within months of retirement, no one "needed" them any more

Yet if anyone talks about life balance in the US there's a perception of weakness.

That said, it pains me to see you guys turning down opportunities that I could use really badly. I just need someone to come out from behind that corporate desk and give me a road test.

Well, some of never expected to actually be called back after submitting apps. With as much jumping around as I've done in the past, ten years, I became a pessimist that actually thought my application went straight for the ignore/delete bin.
However, once I actually started getting called back for interviews within the past, two years, I honestly didn't know how to properly respond. Some of us look forward to better things coming the next day, then there's some of us that assume the worst of everyone and expect nothing good to happen further down the line.
Sad to say, I'd be willing to trade my "fire" with you. Seems like you could utilize it better than some of us down here on the hum-drum end of the train car.

    speedyk Thanks this.

Wow! No way I'd pass up Estes. I've planned to come here or ODFL since I touched a truck. I guess not everyone wants to gross $2000 a week while being at the bottom of the pay scale.

Really Bob? We've had nothing but respectful exchanges, but you let your fingers fly a little loose with that post. Fear? I fear absolutely nothing when it comes to trucking. I do however think AHEAD, and right NOW I'm not in the position to play the guessing game in a "on-call" scenario. Flaked out? Not at all. I told YRC after getting the actual truth from the TM that I'm not going to play the on call game when the terminal is an hour away.

I never formally "turned down" Estes. Actually, they JUST called me this afternoon and informed me the background came back good, and that they'd call me Monday to discuss a start date for the following week in April. As stated several times, the TM informed me that they can't guarantee me 40 hours, or what I'd be doing day to day. The schedule is all over the place, with the very real possibility of traveling out of state to different terminals to help out, and on top of that, there's zero idea of when a bid run would open up. If theres tons of money to be made in the combo position, the TM kept that to himself, as well as giving off the very strong impression that I'd be in combo spot for quite some time. As we all know it's dependent on the terminal. I'm only concerned with Line-Haul, as I've also stated several times after seeing what P&D entails, I'm not interested in the rat race that comes with it, or playing customer care representative everyday.

I do have some specific goals, and I've realized playing the P&D game MIGHT not be my niche. How that comes off as flaking out, or being fearful is beyond me Bob. Either way, it'll be a week before I can even start at LEAST, so in the meantime I'll just run for a semi-local outfit running over-sized loads up and down the interstate for highway construction that scooped me up today, while I was playing phone tag with the out of town flatbed gig, which turned into a actual "regional" run "suddenly."

I appreciate you saying "no offense" at the end of your post, which actually came off the same as a back-handed compliment. I did take slight offense Bob. I'm a nice guy for the most part, but I can be rough around the edges, and when you talk out of the side of your neck in reference to me, I will take offense. It's the moral in this case. I treat folks on here, exactly as I do offline and maybe we grew up in different areas, but one thing you don't do, is speak on another mans behalf, and certainly not in a gossip like manner. That's a female trait Bob. No offense. I hope we can continue with the same respectful exchanges we've had prior to this.

I know you're diggin your gig at Estes and that's great, I'm happy for you Kao. I really am. But you're not going to pull in 2000 gross a week in the combo-driver position, which is the only thing they had available. I will however make that running over-sized loads, and be off on the weekend, as well as being home a couple of nights a week, (yes it's in writing and yes it's w2) Keep doing what you're doing and you'll have a good career there man.
