I bought a 2000 Volvo today 12.7 with 10 speed . The transmission shifts up fine . When downshifting the gears all engage as they should but when I push the selector down in 6th gear it starts grinding as soon as the shifter gets in neutral. I have to flip it back to high to stop the grinding. From a stop it goes into low fine . I am a rookie but had a seasoned driver drive it , his overall shifts were nicer and could sometimes get it into low but with some grinding . I am thinking the low syncro. is wore out . I would like to get a conformation on that . Can that be changed without pulling the transmission?
Eaton fuller 10 speed grinding when switched to low

Sounds like the synchro. You can remove the rear section without pulling the trans. You have to pull counter shaft covers and brace the counter shafts to reinstall the aux section of the trans
Another Canadian driver and RV transporter Thank this. -
Excuse me for my ignorance becuase I’m not that mechanically inclined with the trans but isn’t there something on the trans that supplies airflow to the range selector that fails and sometimes limits air creating this problem. Cheap and easy fix?

I hope so . Like I said I have to come to a stop in 6th then flip down to get back in low smoothAnother Canadian driver Thanks this.

The experienced driver even tried the range selector at very low speeds in a parking lot . Up went fine always a grind then flipped down almost always had to change back to high to stop the grinding

You can disconnect low air line and connect to pressure gauge to double check pressure. That would show for sure if synchro or air

Probably. Need the model number for anyone to answer R&R back box without removing the top plate first. Tag should be on the right rear of the transmission. Some thing like FRO15210C.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

I couldn't find a model tag , I found 2 rebuilder tags . The part on the top right on the back is loose , the bolts are backed out a little. It looks like it has a cable that screws on it.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

I had that problem in an older Volvo! It was (as I was told ) power divider. It finally fell apart and I had to do 700 miles with locked differential.
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
How in the hell did your power divider have anything to do with your range selector not shifting smoothbin your trans? Or did I have too many vodkas tonight and not reading you right?Another Canadian driver and Hulld Thank this.
