Hey! My husband & I need some help. I don't imagine our situation is unique, but after all of our calls & research we still haven't found anything that matches what we're looking for yet (even after messaging Chinatown!)...
We only have one year to drive, so we can't start with one company & then switch to another on our 2nd year.
We are:
We want:
- In our early 30's
- In Houston, TX,
- And he recently got his CDL with hazmat & tanker endorsements (I'm working on my CDL now, with matching endorsements)
- OTR (we could care less about home time)
- Pay over $0.25 (on all miles) or $0.50 (on split miles)
- Dry van or reefer
- At least 5,000 miles a week
If anyone knows of a decent company (reputation-wise), small or mega, that will hire newbies, please comment below. We know we won't be rolling in money, but we want to run as hard as we can & make as much as we can in the time we have. Thanks in advance!
Slightly different situation for a married couple that wants to team drive...

Maybe @blairandgretchen will give advice on Old Dominion Freight Lines.
Be a graduate of a State Certified and Licensed truck driving school, acceptable to Old Dominion and/or have satisfactorily completed the Old Dominion truck driver training program.

What do you mean one year to drive?
-
Thanks Chinatown & sdaniel, we'll check them out!
Ridgeline, that's the time we have due to personal reasons. Do you know of any companies? -
Ain't no worthwhile company gonna be interested in a team that only plans to be driving for a year.
There are better ways to travel the country. Leave the paying jobs to those of us who actually WANT the job.lovespink, Texas_hwy_287, Blackshack46 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I have to agree, this isn't a short term type of job. I for one look for people who are willing to commit to treating this as a vocation, profession and a career. One of the biggest issues in this industry is the revolving door and just looking for part time emoloyement to fill a gap, well that just seems to add to the problem.

.50cpm for a team with no experience what-so-ever is not likely to happen.
Training companies that do teams, do them because they can pay them squat. Training companies that do teams are cheap and put two drivers in the truck because it is cheaper and easier that way.
Other companies that pay teams decent, can, do, and have to, meet insurance and/customer requirements; That means experience is needed. True team loads mean demanding customers will pay a premium. For that premium they are expecting experience and low failure rate.
Get a year or so in with no accidents, then your team can make money.Last edited: Mar 29, 2018

brsims & ridgeline - we do WANT the job. We are not doing this to travel the country; there are simpler ways to do that. The one year was not the original plan, but life happens and you have to adapt and we didn't want to stop something that was already in motion.
Toomanybikes - I understand the logic and reasoning behind what you're saying, but I was hoping that someone knew of a company that maybe wanted to give a couple a chance. Just thought I would ask the people here to see if there were any companies that I missed. -
Can't hurt to ask.
If you do find something let us know.
