I just renewed my apportioned plates for Illinois and I paid the entire fee already. I have my paperwork and I'm good for 2018. I want to switch companies next week and one company I am looking at is based out of Minnesota. They told me they require Minnesota plates. Can I transfer my plate and paid fees and get an MN plate, or do I have to throw my plate in the garbage and buy a MN plate and pay the $1800 fees again? I know Illinois won't issue a refund if I sell my truck, but I don't know about switching states.
Thanks
Transferring plates to different state

Find another company, they can't make you take a plate from another state. And I would never have a truck leased to a company that tells me I need a plate from their state.
This is stupid by the way, not you but these companies that make these stupid demands. You are a contractor to that company leased under the fmcsa regulations and part of those regulations allow plates from other states on trucks that are leased to the carrier.
Oh another bit of advice, ask for their lease contract to be sent to you. By regulations they are to send it to you, if they don't find another company.nightgunner, Dan.S, Dan47 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Come work in company i work for.We dont need to change you plates.Even we can give you free plates
-
I wouldn't agree to take plates of company Im leased to. As mentioned above, I would rather look for different company, then get attached to specific company.
-
I didnt know that. I thought them requiring MN plates was the rules
-
Are you sure they are not requiring you to use their plate, (buy a plate through them)which would be from MN? Some companies do that, Mercer comes to mind. I don't see how they can require you to get a MN plate on your own, I don't think that is going to happen if you don't live in MN.
-
I thought they were saying I need apportioned plates for the state of the carrier that I am leased to. There is no money making scheme going on here, I didn't talk to the bossman yet, just a driver that works there.

Nothing in this world is free. If a carrier is handing out 'free' plates then they are making money is the truck in other ways, most likely with some crap pay per mile contact. Pay the truck 1.3 a mile while charging the customer 3.50.
-
Mercer does not require you to get a plate from them. You can get your own plate and ifta of you so choose.
-
We never do that if we get 3,50 a mile you get 3,5 is that simple.
