Folks beyond poplar belief it is not that hard to teach someone to shift. It just is not.

Now yeah they can get a computer to do it for you. Shifting is very little to do with what we do. Yeah sure some are to lazy to learn it, but it ain't that hard.

Yes. Believe it or not the article said it was a barrier to entry for some.

Undoubtedly. Far to many consider it some mythical skill.

But like anything it just takes repetitions. Anyone could shift a truck with the proper time and training. They trained a #### chimp to shift in pattern.

All of our skills take time and training and focus. To many wash out because they are impatient and unfocused.

Good, if one cannot take the time to learn this minor part of driving, what makes you think they will be professional enough to learn all other aspects it takes to be a professional driver.

Thanks to autos and other factors lowering standards, you are now flooded with a plethora of steering wheel holders

...Which only serves to lower wages for those of us who are actually worth the paper our paychecks are printed on.

No doubt many of them would. My first truck was an International 9670 COE single axle. Talk about a rough riding truck...lol.

As you old timers know, to get in the bunk you had to crawl out of the seat and onto the dog house to get into the "sleeper" which was nothing more than a mattress behind the seats. You had to pretty much lay down to get undressed, and there were no cabinets to stow your bags. You either kept it/them on the passenger seat or in one of the side boxes. Today's sleepers truly are condos compared to back then.

Most autos are terrible for backing, especially on inclines. They are very hard to throttle without being jumpy. Inclines make it a lot worse.
I would rather back with a manual than an auto anyday.
Except for the new Macks. I believe E7s. They got those autos right. They are very easy to back with. They take off hard off the line going forward too.

I was briefly a "contract haul" for WM, in Reno NV and Sterling Ill. Definately NOT the answer, CR England has major problems themselves!

Last few times I tried WM's webpage it was completely disfunctional, did not work!

It's what us at Pan American (airlines) called "B-Scale", below grade starting wages, but THAT was back in 1985! Isn't WMT Union? Otherwise making any changes to work rules DID NOT HAPPEN.

Well, neither is paying drivers in a private fleet 60% more than what they're realistically worth. And if a contract carrier screws up, the contract carrier pays dearly in service penalty charges.
