I turned 21 last July and obtained my CDL A in late February. I have family that do OTR trucking and one is a trainer for a small company, but none of them are owner operators. I was turned down the offer to be my relative's trainee because the company's insurance would not insure anyone under 25, the other companies around the area (Los Angeles, CA) are only looking to hire anyone over 25, 27, or 30 because of insurance not wanting to carry anyone under those ages. Since I just got my CDL A through a trucking school and basically just know enough to pass the DMV test, what is my next step? Should I apply for CRST, C.R. England, and etc. and if I do will they hire someone this young? I do not have any restrictions and do not have endorsements.
Thanks
21 Year old just obtained CDL A, no insurance wants to carry me

Swift. Do your time for a year. Get miles and experience. 21 with no experience will be a hard pass for most. 22 with a year experience and you’ll see a lot of insurance carriers relax a bit. My advice is flatbed because if you can do that, anything else will be a cakewalk should you move on to van or reefer. In fact you’ll be bored with them. Once you have two years experience, 25 years old isn’t even in the equation. You need a carrier that is self insured. If all else fails, most of the megas are 21-22
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
I'll give you some names that do hire 21 yr. old drivers & new cdl grads:
KKW Trucking - Pomona
Butler Transport - www.driveforbutler.com
Navajo Express - has drop yard in Chino.
Sygma Network - hauls for Sysco.
Danny Herman Trucking - 2 facilities in Southern California.
Southern Refrigerated Transport
National Carriers
Don't worry; all the above will put you with a trainer until you're ready to go solo.Last edited: Apr 5, 2018
Bean Jr., deathB4decaf and Hype6477 Thank this. -
I got my cdl at 21 and spent the next 4yrs at US Xpress. You’ll have to go with a “training” company, but you can do way better than Cre or Crst.

I was asking if fuel was a option for me when I was 21, back then. They laughed and say not just no but hell no. Reason is insurance wont even touch anyone below 25.
I don't expect the situation to improve any time soon. -
That brings back memories...bad ones.
I got my CDL at 22, and had an uphill struggle finding a decent outfit to start with. -
