Ok, I'm 20 and I have 2 years of driving experience and my mvr isn't perfect but its not bad by any means. I got woke up this morning but a Manager from a Local grain hauling company asking if I would still be interested in driving for them. They have new equipment and the pay is about what I'm making now driving a Cement Mixer without the winter layoff. Now this company never leaves the state and after he sets up an appointment He calls me back 15 min later saying hes sorry I cant work there b/c I'm not. I'm just kinda confused I guess why bother having a DAC at all if I cant get hired b/c of my age.

It's not the guy that called you. It's the insurance company they deal with.
It cost WAY too much to put you in a truck. It doesn't matter how clean your record is.
Until you turn 23, it will remain that way. While some companies will hire you at 21. Those will be getting even fewer as we go through this downturn in the economy. -
I meant MVR my bad. See the thing I dont understand is how I got hired at 18 to drive what has proven to be one of the most dangerous local trucking jobs around. I cant even begin to count the number of times Ive had wheels just dangling in the air on the edge of losing it but yet I cant drive for a company that is barely ever going to get off of major highways..... Sometimes I think its just dumb luck I havent rolled one yet b/c my current boss is always sending to bad jobsites b/c he knows I can get in without laying it over or breaking ####. Idk ,sorry I just had to vent I'm just sick of getting screwed b/c I'm a younger guy when I have met and had to train many of older drivers that have no buisness being in a truck let alone be given any kind respect just b/c they have been driving a long time. I went to a truck driving school and last spring one of the instructors came to work with us so I had to train him lol needless to say hes never really quit trying to stuff information down my head lol.

Gotcha ya! You got a passion? You like driving, right? Find an outfit that will let you drive but train you technically in some other field. Oil or gas for example. Field engineer or something like that. And not a DirecTV installer, I could train a chimp to do that.
Just my .02
The trucking industry is in for a stormy ride for a few more years, if not longer.

Shoot midget, if you currently have a job, for heaven's sake hang onto it! I did read where you get laid off some in the winter time, but if you know you will be called back, you are better off than a lot of folks. You are still quite young to be a truck driver, as you are finding out.
I know it is hard for you, and that a few years seems like forever, but believe me those few years between 20 and 23 go by only once. Enjoy them while you can. You say you feel like you are being taken advantage of because of your age, and you actually may be. OK, time will take care of that.
I'm really surprised that you could find any class A type job at your age, other than possibly farm/ranch work.
Hang in there man, and good luck to you!Ducks Thanks this. -
Ive been drivin for Ideal Ready Mix the last 2 years driving a cement ready mix truck. I like my job and have the only 07 Mack 10 yard truck with those 4 inch long lug nut spikes lol.. but you cant pour concrete in winter time so I get laid off from mid december to late february depending on the weather of course. I occasionally fill in and drive our Truck and pup when the driver is on vacation and our Cement tanker. Besides me being a typical mouthy young punk lol me an my boss get along good but I would like to go otr when I turn 21 and even have a company lined up for it. However they would like me to get some more experience driving a tractor trailer and I dont get into the tanker enough to use that and a truck and pup although much heavier (ours is legal for 96,000) doesnt quite drive the same. Hell I'm the trainer for our District lol out of all the old timers with years of experience they gave me the job after I turned 19 Partially because i have no problem being honest with people and telling them what they need to learn.

I think it is kind of unfair to judge someone strictly on age alone. i know some 18-20 year old men that are a lot more mature and dependable than some of the 30 year old men. You can fight and die for your country at 18, but cant drive otr until you are 21....go figure.

See that's what I don't get I realize its mostly the insurance companies fault if not entirely. They are also the reason I have to pay a godawful amount on my Personal vehicle insurance I mean $1000 for every 6 months is kinda out there. I guess I'll just count the days till I turn 21 like my friends doo... but waiting on a better job isnt quite the same as being able to buy your own booze I guess.

I drove a Concrete truck before I even had a Drivers License, 15 years old on the weekends Went into some awful places, but never tipped or rolled a drum. I like OTR much better.
